PrairieThunder Scoring Heats Up

ROCHESTER, MI - Bloomington played four games in five days last week, earning five out of a possible eight points. The PrairieThunder scoring has heated up this past week, scoring a total of 14 goals in four games. Forward Don Parsons scored a hat trick Saturday in Muskegon, scoring one even strength goal and two on the man-advantage, all in the first period. Parsons hat trick was the third in PrairieThunder franchise history. Bloomington’s special teams were also coming alive this past week, as they scored five of their 14 goals on the power play and had one shorthanded tally.

After having 11 days off, Flint still had a strong weekend, winning two out of three games played. Their only loss came Thursday in Kalamazoo, when the K-Wings defeated the Generals 5-4 on Pink Ice in honor of Valentine’s Day. Goaltender Matt Spezza had his first back-to-back starts for Flint. Spezza won both games over the weekend, beating Port Huron Friday, who the Generals were tied for second with, and first place Fort Wayne on Saturday.

Fort Wayne continues to be the league’s most penalized team. With a total of 1,448 penalty minutes, the Komets are averaging 28.39 PIM’s a game. With all those penalties, Fort Wayne also has the best penalty killing record. In the 51 games played so far, the Komets have only allowed 48 power play goals against them in 318 opportunities, giving them an 84.9% on the penalty kill.

AROUND THE “I”

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (2-1-0-1) – It was a week of firsts for several PrairieThunder players. Defenseman Tim Schneider recorded his first point of the season with an assist against Fort Wayne on February 13th. Defenseman Casey Handrahan scored his first goal of the season and as a member of the PrairieThunder (64 games) in a victory Sunday over Fort Wayne. Newcomer Blake Stewart scored his first goal and had his first assist in the win over Fort Wayne in only his fourth game with the team. The Bloomington PrairieThunder has scored nine goals in its last two games. In the previous four games, the team had nine goals. Jon Booras has scored at least one point in five of the last six games. He scored seven points in those five games. Don Parsons had scored only one goal in 12 games before scoring five in four games last week, including the team's third hat trick in history in game at Muskegon. In Sunday's victory over Fort Wayne, three of the team's four goals came from three players who have a total of five goals between them -- Brent Clarke (3), Casey Handrahan (1), Blake Stewart (1).

Flint Generals - (2-1-0-0) – After being winless in five games the Generals posted two big wins over the weekend. The Generals posted their third win when trailing after 40 minutes this season, all three have come at home. Two of the victories were recorded in overtime. The Generals posted their ninth win when leading after 40 minutes on the road and their 10th overall. Flint now has six shorthanded goals for as they notched another on Friday night in Port Huron. Jason Cirone has 11 points in his last nine games. The Generals play 12 games over the next 18 days including five games in seven days. Defenseman Brett Westgarth, who continues to play for the Iowa Stars (AHL), scored his first AHL points Sunday in Houston. He scored a goal and had an assist for the Stars.

Fort Wayne Komets - (2-1-1-0) – Friday night's 2-0 victory over Kalamazoo set a new IHL season-high winning streak of seven games and extended the Komet's home winning streak to an IHL season-high 15 games. It was the Komet's fifth highest attended game of the season in Fort Wayne with a crowd of 8,081. The Komets rank fifth overall in pro minor league hockey in America with a per-game average attendance of 7,479 (behind Hershey (AHL) 8,474, Oklahoma City (CHL) 8,248, Wilkes-Barre (AHL) 7,704 and Manitoba (AHL) 7,578). Getting defensive: Friday night's shutout over Kalamazoo was goaltender Kevin Reiter's seventh shutout of the year and 21st win, both career highs for Reiter and league-high marks for 2007-08. Reiter is one shutout away from Fort Wayne's all-time shutout record of eight set by Kevin St. Pierre during the 2003-04 season. Netminder Nick Boucher is undefeated in regulation in the last 11 games he has started (10-0-1) and leads the league with a 2.26 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. The Komets have the stingiest IHL defense with a 2.41 goals-against-average per game. Huk hits 200: Winger David Hukalo skated his 200th Fort Wayne career game Friday night, February 15th and celebrated with an assist in the 2-0 Komets home win over Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo Wings - (2-1-0-0) – Kalamazoo recorded its second straight shutout against Port Huron. Ron Vogel tied a season high with 44 saves to earn the shutout against his former team. Jeff Reynaert set the season high for saves in a game on Pink Ice stopping 44 of 48. Kory Karlander leads the league in scoring with 63. Nick Bootland leads the league in scoring with 31 goals. Bootland leads the team in shorthanded goals with three. Tyler Willis set a K-Wings season high for assist in a game with four on Pink Ice. Kalamazoo has now won five straight games on Pink Ice. Kory Karlander is four points shy of 600 in his career. Kalamazoo has scored 57 goals in the first period, making it their most prolific.

Muskegon Fury - (1-2-0-0) – The Fury had a chance to move into second place in the IHL with a win Wednesday, but remained in fourth place after falling to the Ice Hawks on Wednesday, 4-1. The Fury trail Port Huron by one point for third place with four games in hand on the Ice Hawks. Fury center Mark Cadotte pulled into a tie for the team lead with 31 assist this week. Cadotte had two assists in Friday’s 4-3 win at Bloomington and then had assists on all three Fury goals in Saturday’s home loss to the Prairie Thunder. Friday at Bloomington, Fury captain Dave VanDrunen struck for two goals in the second period, his second and third tallies of the year. Milestones Watch: With one goal this week, Robin Bouchard is now one goal away from 450 in his Muskegon Fury career. He is also 14 goals shy of 600 and eight points shy of 1,200 for his career. Bouchard notched his 450th career assist for the Fury Friday at Bloomington. Philippe Plante passed 100 assists for his Fury career with his assist on Friday at Bloomington, and is 17 points shy of 300 for his career. Kyle Kos is two assists away from 100 for his professional career. Mark Cadotte is 11 assists away from 300 for his career and 15 goals shy of 200 for his career.

Port Huron Icehawks - (1-2-0-0) – With a win Wednesday over Muskegon they moved into sole possession of second place in the IHL, but a loss Friday to Flint, allowed the Generals to move back into a second place tie with Port Huron. A loss Saturday to Kalamazoo, coupled with a Flint win, caused the Icehawks to fall to third place. The Icehawks were shutout by a familiar foe on Saturday as Ron Vogel turned away 44 shots to propel the Kalamazoo Wings to a 2-0 victory at McMorran Arena. The win marked the second straight game that the K-Wings earned a shutout versus the Icehawks. The Icehawks saw highs and lows as far as penalty minutes last week. Wednesday’s game with Muskegon saw the whistle blow for just three penalties and six PIM’s which tied a season low for the Icehawks. Friday game was a different story, as an all-out brawl versus Flint led to 138 PIM’s in the third period alone, and a total of 160 PIM’s throughout the game, both season highs for Port Huron. With a goal and an assist on Wednesday and an assist on Friday, rookie Jamie Carroll has now averaged a point per game in his last 13 games, with five goals and ten assists in that span.
