CHL All-Stars to Shine on Wednesday in Broomfield

The 2008 CHL All-Star Game is set for Wednesday, January 16th in Broomfield, Colorado at the Broomfield Event Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM (MST). The host Rocky Mountain Rage has done an outstanding job of preparing this week to be a memorable one for the all-stars and the fans of the CHL.
The festivities kick off with the All-Star Banquet on Tuesday night at the Broomfield Event Center. All the all-star participants will be introduced and comedian Josh Blue will be performing (winner of the 2006 Last Comic Standing). On Wednesday afternoon, there will be a Fan Fest at the event center beginning at 4:30 PM (MST) and then following that will be the main event with the All-Star game.
This year’s game will be available on the CHL Network beginning at 6:30 PM (MST) with the pre-game show and then carrying all the action LIVE. Colorado’s Tori Holt and Arizona’s Robby Incmikoski will bring you all the action.
NORTH LOOKS TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK
The North versus South format has been the norm for the past six seasons in the CHL and the rivalry has been pretty one-sided. The North has won five of the six meetings including each of the last four match-ups. Two of the last three games have gone into a shootout with last year’s game being won by the North 9-6 in Bossier-Shreveport.
COACHING COMPARISONS
Both all-star coaches will be making their debuts as all-star bench bosses. Rocky Mountain’s Tracy Egeland has done a remarkable job turning around the Rage seeing them post a 24-5-3 first-half record. Last season, Rocky Mountain went 17-40-7 in their expansion campaign. Arizona’s Marco Pietroniro will main the ship for the Southern Conference. His Sundogs have struggled a bit heading into the break going just 3-4-3 in their last 10 games but most believe they have one of the most talented teams in the CHL and are serious President’s Cup contenders at 20-10-4 in the first half.
PANKEWICZ LOOKS TO ADD TO RECORD
Colorado forward Greg Pankewicz enters this year’s All-Star game as the record holder for the most points in all-star competition. In the three games he has played, the Eagles captain has recorded seven goals with eight assists for 15 points. In the 2005 all-star game, Pankewicz recorded a record nine points (5-4=9).
LANDMESSER IN 6TH STRAIGHT ALL-STAR GAME
Mississippi defenseman Derek Landmesser leads all players this season in all-star games played. The game in Broomfield will be his sixth consecutive trip to the game tying him for the second most appearances all-time. He has scored six points (1-5=6) in his previous five appearances. The leader is former Oklahoma City defenseman Hardy Sauter who played in eight all-star games. One appearance behind Landmesser is Youngstown’s Chris Richards, Odessa’s Sebastien Thinel and Wichita’s Daniel Tetrault, all will be playing in their fifth CHL all-star game.
SCORING LEADERS AT THE BREAK
Five players head into the all-star break with 50+ points pitting an interesting race for the scoring champion in the second half. Leading the way is Laredo’s Jeff Bes who has 59 points (24-35=59) followed by a pair of Sundogs in Alex Leavitt (56 points) and Tyler Redenbach (53 points). Rounding out the top five is Rocky Mountain’s Brent Cullaton (52) and New Mexico’s Konrad Reeder (50 points). All five will be at the all-star game.
