Komets Remain on Top of IHL Standings
Monday, Dec. 31st, 2007
ROCHESTER, MI - The battle for first place in the IHL began Friday night with a home-and-home series versus the first place Fort Wayne Komets and the second place Flint Generals, who were two points out of first. The Generals dominated Friday’s contest from the beginning, scoring a league-high nine goals against the visiting Komets. Flint was a stellar six for nine on the power play, increasing their league best power play percentage to 23.19%. The 9-3 victory over the Komets tied the Generals for first place.
Fort Wayne would not let the 9-3 defeat from the previous night interfere with their game Saturday, as they traveled back home to Memorial Coliseum looking to regain sole possession of first. The Komets answered back from the previous night, scoring nine goals of their own and holding Flint to just one goal. Of the Komets nine tallies, veteran center Colin Chaulk had the hat trick, scoring one power play and two even strength goals. The 9-1 defeat over the Generals marks the largest margin of victory to date in the IHL.
No goaltender has won more shootouts in the IHL than Kalamazoo’s Jeremy Symington. Symington has a league leading three wins in the shootout, with two of those three coming this week. The first was Wednesday night in Flint when he relieved teammate Brad Smith to begin the third period. The second was Saturday night when Symington made a league-high six saves in an eight round shootout versus Bloomington, handing the PrairieThunder their first shootout loss of the season.
