Generals Charge Through December

ROCHESTER, MI - The Flint Generals have put together a nice run in the month of December. Flint has not lost in regulation since December 1st, extending their unbeaten streak to seven games. They entered Sunday’s game on a league-high six game winning streak, only to have that stopped by the Muskegon Fury after an overtime loss. The Generals play four more games this month, three of those at home where they currently have a record of 8-4-0-2.

Teams came out for the second period with a drive to score this past week. Combined, all six member clubs scored a total of 32 goals in the second stanza, with the K-Wings scoring 10 of those tallies. A total of 167 goals scored so far make the second the most prolific scoring period overall.

AROUND THE “I”

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (0-3-0-0) – Sam Ftorek is currently on a nine-game streak where he has scored at least one point in a game, which is a franchise record. He has had a hand in four of the last five goals the team has scored and eight of the last 10. He has scored at least one point in 12 of the last 13 games for 19 points. The PrairieThunder has given up six power play goals in the last four games. The previous four games the team did not allow a power play goal in 15 attempts. Bloomington had scored a power play goal in eight of nine games before being shut out the last two games. Rookie Brett Holmberg scored his second goal of the season last week exactly one month from the anniversary of his first goal as a professional. The PrairieThunder has averaged only 22 shots on goal during its current four-game losing streak.

Flint Generals - (2-0-1-0) – The Flint Generals finished the week 2-0-1-0. The Generals had a six game winning streak (the longest in the IHL) snapped by the Muskegon Fury on Sunday evening in overtime. However Flint has won six of seven games. The Generals still have no losses in regulation on the road this season. Jason Cirone has nine points in his last five games with three goals and six assists for nine points. In this stretch he has two game winners, one power play goal and one first goal. Cirone has 11 points in the month of December alone. Friday’s 7-6 overtime win over the Muskegon Fury was the first for the Generals when trailing after 40 minutes this season and their first win when a game has gone past the regulation of 60 minutes of play.

Fort Wayne Komets - (2-1-0-0) – Komets continue to hold the top spot in the IHL after 10 weeks and at the Christmas break, winning two of three games played for the week and improving to 15-6-3-1 for 34 points. Komets complete the week riding a five-game road winning streak after taking their 3rd straight win from the IceHawks Sunday at Port Huron. Streaking Komets: Colin Chaulk (C) three-game point streak (1g, 7a, 8pts.); Terry Marchant (C) three-game point streak (2g, 2a, 4pts.); Luciano Aquino (RW) three-game point streak (3g, 2a, 5pts.) and three-game goal streak (3g); Nick Boucher (G) four-game winning streak and three-game road win streak; Komets five-game road win streak. IHL leading Komets: Luciano Aquino 32 points (leads rookies with 15 goals, 17 assists and 32 points); Colin Chaulk 19 assists; Nick Boucher 2.17 goals against average; Komets lead with 698 penalty minutes, fewest goals against per game average at 2.68, and most shots per game average of 34.0, fewest shots against per game average of 28.6.

Kalamazoo Wings - (2-1-1-0) – Glenn Detulleo is on an eight-game point streak, which ties him with Kory Karlander for the team season high. Dan Tessier is on a four-game assist streak, which ties him with Glenn Detulleo for the team season high. Kalamazoo has killed of 27 of its last 29 opponents power-play chances. K-Wings are 2-0-0-2 on Sunday's. Detulleo is six assists shy of 200 in his career. Jamie Vanderveeken is tied for first among power-play goals among defensemen with four. Joel Rechlicz is currently on AHL call-up with the Albany River Rats of the AHL. Kalamazoo is 10-2-0-2 when scoring first. The K-Wings will finish out December with four games in six nights. Nick Bootland, Florian Iberer and Travis Granbois all share the K-Wings team lead in game-winners scored with two.

Muskegon Fury - (1-1-1-0) – Robin Bouchard moved into first place in Fury History on Sunday when he played in his 665th career game for Muskegon. With three assists over the weekend, Bouchard has 435 for his career, one behind Todd Robinson for the all-time lead in Fury History. Friday night, Russ Moyer connected for his first career professional goal against Flint. Saturday, Rich Meloche notched his first career point for the Fury as he assisted on a Justin Rohr goal. Saturday, Chris Kovalcik notched his first fight for the Fury, when he went toe-to-toe with Olivier Legault of Ft. Wayne. This week, Muskegon prepared to face the Pt. Huron IceHawks three consecutive times. The Icehawks lead the Fury by four points in the IHL standings, but the Fury have six games in hand of Pt. Huron. The teams will clash Wednesday and Saturday in Muskegon and Friday in Pt. Huron.

Port Huron Icehawks - (3-1-0-0) – Several Icehawks reached milestones again this week. Left wing Tab Lardner played in his 400th professional game on Wednesday at Kalamazoo. He needs just one more point to reach 300 for his career. Center Ryan Markham surpassed 50 points for his career with two assists on Wednesday at Kalamazoo and Center Mike Olynyk surpassed 900 penalty minutes on Saturday at Kalamazoo. Rookie right wing Jamie Carroll returned to the line-up on Sunday after missing two games. He was called up Friday to join the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. Carroll met former teammate Neil Clark on the ice in Grand Rapids Friday. Both Carroll and Clark were called up to Grand Rapids on December 10, while Clark still remains with the team. The Icehawks continue to lead the league for goals scored (89), third period goals (38), shots in all periods, and total shots on goal (820). Port Huron has more penalty minutes against Fort Wayne this season than any other team with 190. That tradition continued during Sunday’s meeting between the two teams, with a total of 17 penalties and 46 penalty minutes called, including two fights.
