Hats Flew for Three in IHL

ROCHESTER, MI - After having just three hat tricks scored in the first eight weeks of the season in the IHL, that total has since doubled after three players from three different teams completed hat tricks over the weekend. The hats began to fly Friday night for Kalamazoo’s leading scorer, Kory Karlander. He scored two even strength and one power play goal in the 7-0 victory over the Fury. The following night, Komets rookie Mathieu Curadeau recorded his first pro hat trick, scoring three even strength goals in the Komets 5-4 overtime loss to the Fury. That same night, Bloomington forward Sam Ftorek lit the lamp for all three of Bloomington’s goals, pushing them to a 3-1 win over Port Huron.
The K-Wings’ 7-0 victory over the Fury Friday night marked the largest margin of victory in the IHL this season. Kalamazoo joins Fort Wayne and Flint as the only three teams to score seven goals in one game. The win stopped Muskegon’s four-game winning streak and five game road win streak.
The Fort Wayne Komets are the leagues most penalized team, having a total of 603 penalty minutes and averaging 27.41 minutes per game. As a result of the penalties, they still continue to dominate on the penalty kill. The Komets have the best penalty kill percentage in the league at 85%. They have killed off 119 of 140 chances in the 22 games played.

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (1-2-1-0) – Right winger Sam Ftorek has scored at least a point in six straight games (7 goals and 4 assists) and in nine of the last 10 games for 15 points (9 goals and 6 assists) including four multi-point games. He had the second hat trick in franchise history this week against Port Huron. Forward Leo Thomas has at least one point in the last four games (six points total on 2 goals and 4 assists) Rob Guinn scored a goal on his first shot in a PrairieThunder uniform last week against Kalamazoo. The PrairieThunder leads the league in power play percentage on the road, having converted 12 of 77 for 19.5 %. The team has scored at least one power play goal in its last six games on the road, and only three times this year have they been shutout on the power play on the road. Members of the PrairieThunder filled 50 bags (60 gallon trash bags) of toys collected at the Bloomington VFW and dropped them off at the Toys for Tots headquarters. The team also collected 532 teddy bears during its Teddy Toss game on Saturday that were donated to Toys for Tots.
Flint Generals - (2-0-0-0) – The Flint Generals remain unbeaten on the road in regulation. In their five victories the Generals have given up two goals or less and three of the goals allowed have been via the power play. In the two shootout losses, the team surrendered at least four. Eric Marvin has four of the five team’s victories on the road and his goals against average is less than two per game. The Generals still rank number one in Goals For in the IHL and still sit second in goals against. The Generals won their 10th game this season when leading after 40 minutes of hockey but just their third one-goal game. Michel Beausoleil and Jason Cirone have been leading the way in terms of lighting the lamp in the IHL with 12 points a piece in their last 10 games. Beausoleil and Cirone each have four goals and eight assists. Jared Dumba leads the Generals with seven goals in his last 10 games.
Fort Wayne Komets - (2-0-1-0) – The Komets earned five of a possible six points in three games played and improved to 13-5-3-1 after nine weeks and 22 games. The Komets are the first IHL team to reach 30 points this season as they continue to hold first place for the second straight week. Rookie Mathieu Curadeau has a current IHL high four-game goal scoring streak (6g) and four-game point streak (6g, 1a, 7pts.). Speaking of streaks: the Komets are on a five-game unbeaten (in regulation) streak; P.C. Drouin (LW) is riding a three-game point streak and assist streak (5a). David Hukalo has scored the game winning goal in each of the Komet's last two straight wins and has a three-game point scoring streak (2g, 1a); Netminder Nick Boucher has won his last three straight starts. The Komets have allowed the league's lowest shots per game average of 28.5 and have the IHL's highest shots per game average of 35.2. IHL leaders: Nick Boucher leads goaltenders with 2.21 GAA. Luciano Aquino leads with 14 assists (t) and 26 points (t). Kevin Bertram leads with 111 penalty minutes. Best goals-against average at 2.59.
Kalamazoo Wings - (2-1-0-0) – Glenn Detulleo is currently a on a four-game point streak. Mike Manley needs one point to reach 100 in his career. Kory Karlander recorded the K-Wings first hat trick of the year on Saturday versus Muskegon. Karlander's five game goal and eight game point streaks were snapped Wednesday in Bloomington. Jeremy Symington recorded the K-Wings first shutout of the year on Saturday versus Muskegon. K-Wings will play four games in five nights starting on Wednesday. After playing nine of its last 13 on the road, Kalamazoo will play eight of its next 13 at home. Kalamazoo penalty kill is 85.7% at home, the highest of any team in the IHL. Kalamazoo leads the league in power-play goals with 23. With two wins last week, Kalamazoo moved into third place in the league, just five points out of second place, and seven points out of first.
Muskegon Fury - (1-1-0-0) – With their 7-0 defeat Friday night by Kalamazoo, the Fury snapped a four-game winning streak as well as a five game road win streak. Goaltender Isaac Reichmuth has been an iron man for the Fury, playing a total of 990:37 between the pipes so far this season. He also leads the IHL in saves with 484. Defenseman Philippe Plante continues to dominate the IHL defenseman in scoring power play goals. Plante has a total of four, with seven power play assists. The Fury play one more road contest before heading home for three straight games. Currently, the Fury are 3-6-0-0 at L.C. Walker Arena. They currently have a two game home winning streak. When the Fury have the lead after 40 minutes, they are undefeated in regulation. They have a record of 6-0-1-0, with their lone overtime loss coming in Bloomington on November 2nd.
Port Huron Icehawks - (0-2-0-0) – Port Huron wrapped up a five game home stand over the weekend and fell to fourth place in the International Hockey League, posting losses Friday and Saturday versus Fort Wayne and Bloomington. Port Huron is currently on a five game streak for losses and a six game streak for losses on home ice. Port Huron will look for their first win against the K-Wings this season. They are currently 0-3 on the season series with Kalamazoo. The K-Wings are the only IHL foe they have yet to defeat this season. Several Icehawks reached milestones over the weekend. Defenseman Mark DeSantis played in his 900th professional game on Friday, center Kris Vernarsky surpassed 100 assists for his professional career with two assists during Friday’s game, defenseman Chris Bogas played in his 500th professional game on Saturday, right wing Ryan Markham played in his 125th professional game on Saturday and left wing Jeff Zehr surpassed 1000 penalty minutes during Friday’s game. He now has 1001 penalty minutes for his professional career.
