Icehawks Fly to Five Straight

Monday, Dec. 3rd, 2007

ROCHESTER, MI - Port Huron has regained first place in the IHL standings after Fort Wayne lost both games they played over the weekend. The Icehawks are riding a league-high five game winning streak with all five of those games being played on the road. Port Huron is the leagues most traveled team so far, playing 12 of their 18 games on the road. Their next five contests will be on home ice, which they are 4-2-0-0.

A mix of the veterans and rookies stepped up big in the seventh week of the IHL season. Out of the 38 goals scored this past week, 25 were scored by the veterans and the rookies combined. Vets tallied 15 goals and had 31 assists, while the rookies scored 10 goals and dished out 15 assists over the weekend.

Bloomington’s rookie forward Jarrett Robertson, who was signed Friday (11/30), notched his first pro goal on Saturday in the second period in Fort Wayne. Just under four minutes later, Robertson scored the second goal of his career, which turned out to be the game-winner. Also jumping into the first pro goal category Saturday night was Kalamazoo right wing Joel Rechlicz, who scored his first in the second period in Muskegon.

AROUND THE “I”

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (2-0-0-0) – For the first time in PrairieThunder history, the team has won three straight on the road. Its previous best was two last season. The second period has proven to be the key for the PrairieThunder in its last six games. In four of those games, the team has scored three goals in the second period and has outscored the opponent, 14-6 in the second period in those four games. Rookie Jarrett Robertson didn't take long to make his presence felt for the PrairieThunder. He scored two goals in his second game in a PrairieThunder jersey, including the game-winner, at Fort Wayne on Saturday. Cory Laylin scored the team's first short-handed goal of the year against Muskegon on Friday. Veteran Don Parsons has a string of four straight games where he has scored at least one point. During that stretch, he has scored seven points.

Flint Generals - (1-0-0-1) – As the month of November drew to a close for the Flint Generals, Jordan Fox led the way with 16 points, and nine goals, while Jason Cirone had seven goals and 13 points. Cirone led the Generals in plus minus with plus 11. The Generals still rank second in goal scored with 53, but are now tied for first in goals against with 41. Despite ranking third in total penalty minutes in the IHL, the Generals still lead the league in average amount of minutes per game at 29. The Generals have surrendered just 21 goals through the first 40 minutes of hockey in games played this season. However the area that is of a concern is the final 40 minutes where they have given up a total of 16. Flint still ranks first in goals scored per game and now ranks second in goals against behind the Port Huron Icehawks. All eight of the Generals wins this season have come when they have lead after 40 minutes of hockey, while five of them have taken place when they have out shot an opponent.

Fort Wayne Komets - (0-1-1-0) – The Komets earned one point in two games played, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to the visiting Port Huron Icehawks Friday night and suffering a 4-3 loss to Bloomington on Fort Wayne ice Saturday. Only the second time this season the Komets were winless in back-to-back games. Friday night's 2-1 loss in overtime was the first Komet regular season overtime loss since March 11, 1990 vs. Kalamazoo, 5-4. Friday night's game was the Fort Wayne Komet's (regular season and playoffs) 4500th game since the franchise began in 1952. Rookie Luciano Aquino pointed in both Komet games of the week (1g, 1a), maintaining a team lead of 11 goals, 18 points in 16 games. Veteran center Colin Chaulk also scored points in both games (1g, 1a) and leads the Komets with 10 assists. Komets were successful on 11 of 13 penalty kills to improve to a league second best 84.2% penalty kill rating (80 of 95).

Kalamazoo Wings - (1-1-0-0) – K-Wings four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-0-2) was snapped on Saturday in Muskegon. Besides snapping its unbeaten streak, the loss to Muskegon was the first for the franchise on a Teddy Bear Toss Night. All-time the K-Wings are 11-1-0 (7-0-0 home, 4-1-0 away) on Teddy Bear Toss games. Kalamazoo will host its own Teddy Bear Toss Night on Saturday versus Fort Wayne. Kory Karlander is on a five-game point streak. Jeremy Symington leads the league in GAA at 2.26, save percentage at .927 and tied for wins with six. When the K-Wings return home on Saturday, they will have played seven of its last eight contests on the road. Flo Iberer leads all IHL defensemen in scoring with 15 points. He also leads the entire league in plus/minus at +12. Saturday's game against Muskegon snapped a streak of shootout games for Kalamazoo. Previous to the contest against Muskegon, the K-Wings played in three straight shootout games. They went 1-2 during the stretch. Glenn Detulleo has scored three goals in his last three games. Kalamazoo is 6-0-0-1 when leading after the first period.

Muskegon Fury - (1-1-0-0) – The Fury’s six-goal output Saturday night equaled their best single game output of the season. They also defeated the Icehawks in Port Huron by the same exact result back on November 17th. Rookie center Chris Mills registered his first two-pro assists Saturday night as he assisted on his team’s first and sixth goals in the 6-4 triumph over Kalamazoo. The Fury enjoyed a strong third period in their two games the past weekend, outscoring the opposition 4-1. Mike Watt’s power play/game winning goal in the third period Saturday night in the Fury’s 6-4 verdict over Kalamazoo represented his first goal on home ice thus far this season. Watt had produced his first three-goals for the season on the road. Goaltender Issac Reichmuth started nine of the Fury’s 10-games in November and has started 13 of the team’s initial 14-gams on the campaign.

Port Huron Icehawks - (2-0-0-0) – Entering week seven of IHL action, Port Huron has played more games than any other IHL team with 19. They lead the league for goals (65), assists (102), and points (167). Three Icehawks players are also among the league scoring leaders. Jamie Carroll and Tab Lardner are tied for first place with 21 points each. Jeff Zehr is tied for fifth with 17 points. Left wing Tab Lardner continued his torrid pace over the weekend, adding one assist and two goals. He assisted on a game winning goal from Defenseman Joe Markusen in overtime on Friday and notched two third period goals on Saturday, including the game winner, a shorthanded goal with just one minute and fifty seconds left to play. He is currently riding an eight game streak for points. He is tied with teammate Jamie Carroll for first place in the league for scoring leaders with 21 points. With a shorthanded goal on Saturday, the Icehawks continue to lead the league for shorthanded goals with four for the season.
