IHL Special Teams Prove to Be Powerful

ROCHESTER, MI - All six of the member clubs’ special teams came to life this past week. Of the 38 total goals scored over the weekend, there were a combined 16 power play goals tallies. Six of those man-advantage goals were scored by the Port Huron Icehawks, who have the best power play record on home ice at 33.3% (9 for 27), and third best overall at 19.42% (12 for 62). The Generals and Icehawks contests that were played Friday and Sunday had a total of eight power play goals scored.
The Kalamazoo Wings extended their current winning streak to four games, winning both games they played Friday and Saturday. Kalamazoo’s offense has exploded over those four games, scoring 19 goals. Of those 19 goals, K-Wings captain Nick Bootland has scored seven and also leads the league in goals scored with eight.
For the second straight week, the Flint Generals are still atop the IHL standings after a tough shootout loss Sunday in Port Huron. There is a three-way tie for second place between Kalamazoo, Port Huron, and Fort Wayne, each having 10 points. Bloomington (8 points) and Muskegon (7 points) are close behind as the fifth week of IHL action begins with home-and-home series for all six teams Friday night (11/16) and Saturday night (11/17).

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (0-2-0-0) – The PrairieThunder has scored at least one power play goal in 8 of its 9 games. It had a streak of seven straight snapped by Kalamazoo before beginning a new streak the next night vs. Fort Wayne. The PrairieThunder had a season-low 17 shots on goal against Fort Wayne. Five members of the PrairieThunder represented the organization at the Jingle Bell for Arthritis run/walk Sunday where 1,700 runners participated. The Thunder participated in the one mile walk. Those making the walk were Sam Ftorek, Sam Miller, Loic Lacasse, Jamison Orr, Jeff Ewasko and Brent Clarke. Rookie Jamison Orr scored his first professional goal in the Thunder's game at Kalamazoo.
Flint Generals - (1-1-0-1) – Three of the four Flint Generals losses this season have occurred on Saturdays (1-2-0-1) with the latest against the Muskegon Fury 3-1. The Generals are 0-0-0-2 in games at McMorran Arena this season with the first two games at Port Huron being decided in shootouts. Rookies came to the forefront for the Flint Generals this past weekend with Mike Alexiou scoring twice and then Jonathan Duchesneau fired his first two professional goals on Sunday in Port Huron. Forward Jordan Fox leads the IHL in scoring heading into week four with seven goals and 12 points. The Flint Generals have outshot their opponents in the first two periods by a wide margin this season but have been out shot in the final 20 minutes. Jason Cirone has been on a roll lately with six points in his last seven games.
Fort Wayne Komets - (1-0-0-1) – Fort Wayne snapped a four game road winless streak with a 4-2 win at Bloomington Saturday. It was Fort Wayne's first road victory of the season. The Komets have out-shot opponents in all eight games played to date. Rookie center Mathieu Curadeau leads the Komets with five goals and eight points. Has points in all but one of the eight games played this season. The Komets are 4-0 when Curadeau scores. Komets defense has allowed fewest goals against in the IHL with 19 GA, and lead the IHL with a 2.38 goals-against average. Komet goaltender Kevin Reiter is tied with Kalamazoo's Jeremy Symington with a 2.15 goals-against average (minimum 150 minutes) going into this weekend’s home-and-home series vs. Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo Wings - (2-0-0-0) – The K-Wings have won a season high four-straight games and have won three straight at Wings Stadium. Kalamazoo will commence a four-game road swing this Saturday, November 17th @ Fort Wayne. Nick Bootland, Kory Karlander and Jamie Vanderveeken are on five-game point streaks. The streak is a K-Wings season high. Bootland needs three points to reach 400 in his career. Kalamazoo signed Matthias Iberer on Saturday. Iberer is the younger brother of defenseman Florian Iberer. The signing makes the Iberer's the fifth set of brothers and sixth overall family connection in IHL history to play for the K-Wings. Kalamazoo has scored the game's first goal in five of its eight games (4-1-0-0). Ranked last in home power-play at 3.3%, the K-Wings rank first in road power-play percentage at 26.3 %.
Muskegon Fury - (2-0-0-0) – Since opening the season with back-to-back defeats at home (0-2-0-0), the Fury have posted a 3-1-1-0 mark in their last five decisions. With Issac Reichmuth in goal the past weekend, the Fury grudgingly surrendered only three goals against in 125 minutes of hockey for a GAA of 1.44. For the fourth consecutive week, the Fury special teams are foremost in the IHL. The power play is 9 for 39 (23.1%), having scored a power play goal in each of their seven games. The penalty killing unit is also number one, killing 35 of 38 attempts (92.1%). With two wins in two nights this past weekend, Muskegon (645) is five wins away from franchise win number 650.
Port Huron Icehawks - (1-2-0-0) – After tallying two road losses Friday and Saturday against Flint and Kalamazoo (both by margins of 5-2), the Icehawks snapped a four game losing streak on Sunday with a 6-5 shootout win over the Flint Generals on home ice. Defenseman Jamie Lovell and Jeremy Leroux each landed a shootout goal for the Icehawks. The game marked the second time Port Huron has taken on the Generals on home ice this season. Both clashes resulted in an Icehawks shootout win. The Icehawks have fared well on home ice this season. They hold a 4-1 record at home and a 1-5 record on the road. Goalie Marty Magers was the winning goalie in Sunday’s shootout win over Flint. He is currently ranked third in the league for total saves with 193 on the season.
