Dayton's Fitzpatrick Ties ECHL Record With Five Third-Period Goals
Sunday, Nov. 4th, 2007
Chanse Fitzpatrick of the Dayton Bombers had a record-setting night on Saturday with five goals, including four on the power play, in the third period of a 5-1 win against Trenton. Fitzpatrick set the ECHL record for power-play goals in a period while tying the league mark for goals in a period and power-play goals in a game.
"It has not sunk in yet," Fitzpatrick told the Dayton Daily News. "I couldn't believe it when it was happening and I still can't."
Fitzpatrick becomes the 25th player in ECHL history to score five goals in a game and the first since Jan. 8, 2005 when Chris Minard of Alaska accomplished the feat against Victoria, including four goals in the first period.
"Everything I touched went into the net," Fitzpatrick said. "It was unbelievable."
Fitzpatrick, who had not scored a point in his first three games, scored his first goal, on the power play, 52 seconds into the third period to tie the game 1-1, and added his second at 2:58 to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead. He then scored three power-play goals in 2:31 with markers at 15:03, 16:20 and 17:34.
Lars Pettersen of Augusta scored five goals, including three on the power play, in the third period of a 7-6 loss to Birmingham on Feb. 11, 1999. Pettersen's goals were scored in a 16:04 span at 2:55, 3:44, 10:09, 11:25 and 18:56.
Columbus' Matt Oates scored four power-play goals in a game on Mar. 8, 1996 at Erie. Fitzpatrick is the second Dayton player to score five goals joining Jamie Ling, who recorded the achievement on Jan. 15, 1999 against Roanoke.
Yannick Tifu assisted on all five of the goals, setting a career best for assists in a game and tying his career high for points, while rookie Matt Beaudoin assisted on the second, third and fourth goals, setting career highs for assists and points.
It was the first professional hat trick for Fitzpatrick, who had scored two goals in a game twice. Acquired by Dayton in an August trade with Phoenix, he had scored three points in a game two times in his career.
"I came in here after the trade and wanted to be the go-to guy and put up some points for the team," he said. "But three games and no goals - it was very frustrating.
"When I came in tonight, I just wanted to keep it simple and make all of my shots count."
In his first three professional seasons, the 23 year old had 83 points (37g-46a) and 362 penalty minutes in 126 regular season ECHL games and four points (2g-2a) and four penalty minutes in five Kelly Cup Playoff games with Columbia and Phoenix while also playing in the AHL where he had one goal and 49 penalty minutes in 18 games with Binghamton and Manitoba.
Eleven players in the National Hockey League have scored four goals in a period while six players have accomplished the deed in the American Hockey League. The last player in the NHL was Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux at Montreal on Jan. 26, 1997 while the last player in the AHL was Cape Breton's Ralph Intranuovo against St. John on Apr. 16, 1996.
The record for most goals in an ECHL game is six by Hampton Roads' Tom Bissett on Nov. 22, 1989 against Greensboro and Toledo's Brad McCaughey against Columbus on Nov. 6, 1991.
