Thrashers Sign Defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski (KWEE-at-KOW-skee), according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.
Kwiatkowski, 30, tallied 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 41 games with the Florida Panthers last season. He also appeared in one game with Pittsburgh after being acquired by the Penguins from the Panthers in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on Feb. 27.
The 6-0, 205-pound defenseman has appeared in 264 career NHL games over six seasons with Ottawa, Washington, Florida and Pittsburgh, recording 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) and 225 penalty minutes. Kwiatkowski appeared in six playoff games with the Capitals in 2003. The native of Kindersley, Saskatchewan has tallied 154 points (48 goals, 106 assists), along with a plus-49 rating, in 374 career minor-league contests with Cincinnati (AHL), Grand Rapids (IHL/AHL), Binghamton (AHL), San Antonio (AHL) and St. John’s (AHL).
Prior to his professional career, Kwiatkowski spent three seasons with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League, registering 156 points (48 goals, 108 assists) in 206 games. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the eighth round, 194th overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
