Oilers Sign Restricted Free Agent Dustin Penner

The Edmonton Oilers have signed restricted free agent left winger Dustin Penner to a five-year contract.

The 6’4”, 245-pound native of Winkler, Manitoba appeared in all 82 games for the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in 2006-07, scoring a career-high 29-16-45 with 58 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old forward finished second in goal scoring, fourth in powerplay goals with nine and was eighth on the Ducks scoring list. His 45 points broke the Ducks record for most points in a season by a rookie, and he finished fifth in scoring among NHL rookies. Penner ranked among the league rookie leaders in goals (2nd), powerplay goals (3rd), game-winning goals (3rd) and shots (2nd). He led all rookies with 19 road goals and was tied for 11th in the NHL.

During the Ducks drive for the Stanley Cup, Penner scored three goals and added five assists for eight points as he appeared in all 21 playoff games.

He made his NHL debut with Anaheim in 2005-06, scoring 4-3-7 with 14 penalty minutes in 19 games and then added 3-6-9 in 13 playoff games as the Ducks were eliminated by the Oilers in five games in the 2006 Western Conference Final. He scored 2-1-3 in five games versus the Oilers.

Overall, Penner has scored 33-19-52 with 72 penalty minutes in 101 career NHL games.
