Capitals Sign Joe Motzko

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed free agent right wing Joe Motzko to a two-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Motzko, 27, was a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks, seeing action in three playoff games including one in the finals. A native of Bemidji, Minn., Motzko originally signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent on May 15, 2003. He saw action in 11 games over the course of three seasons before being traded to the Ducks on Jan. 26, 2007. He has recorded one career NHL point, a goal scored against Chicago on Jan. 16, 2007.
The 6’0’’, 196-pound Motzko has registered 168 points (72 goals, 96 assists) in 279 games in the American Hockey League between Columbus’ affiliate (Syracuse) and Anaheim’s affiliate (Portland). Motzko played four seasons of college hockey at St. Cloud State University before turning pro, notching 142 points (52 goals, 90 assists) in 154 games.
