Ducks Sign Shane Hnidy

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Shane Hnidy to a two-year contract.

Hnidy, 31 (9/8/75), played in 72 games last season with the Atlanta Thrashers, scoring 5-7=12 points with a +15 rating. He set NHL single-season highs in games, goals, assists and plus/minus. The 6-2, 210-pound defenseman has played in 336 career NHL games with Ottawa, Nashville and Atlanta, scoring 9-28=37 points with a +18 career rating. Hnidy has also played in 23 career NHL playoff games, scoring 2-1=3 points.

A native of Neepawa, Manitoba, Hnidy was drafted by Buffalo in the seventh round (173rd overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2000-2001, playing in 52 games (3-2=5 points). He played with Ottawa from 2000-2004 before being acquired by Nashville in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2004 Entry Draft on March 9, 2004.

Hnidy was acquired by Atlanta in exchange for a 2006 fourth-round draft pick on July 30, 2005 and spent the past two seasons with the Thrashers.
