Rangers Sign Chris Drury

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent center Chris Drury.

Drury, 30, appeared in 77 games with the Buffalo Sabres this past season, registering 37 goals and 32 assists for 69 points, along with 30 penalty minutes. While serving as co-captain of the Sabres for the second consecutive season, he led the club with 17 power play goals, three shorthanded goals, and nine game-winning goals. He also placed second on the club with a career-high 37 goals, led the team in faceoffs won (948) and ranked first among team forwards in blocked shots (65). His career-high 69 points was good for third-best on the team.

In addition, he led the Sabres in goals (eight) and game-winning goals (three) in the postseason. His eight goals tied for third among all NHL players in the playoffs. He also placed second on the Sabres in postseason scoring with 13 points.

In 2005-06, Drury led Buffalo in goals (30) and power play goals (16), and ranked second on the team with 67 points in 81 games during the regular season. He also ranked third in the NHL in faceoff wins (911) and placed second among all NHL forwards with 86 blocked shots. In the 2006 playoffs, Drury tied for third in the league with nine goals and tied for sixth among all players in the NHL with 18 points (nine goals and nine assists) in 18 games.

The 5-10, 200-pounder has skated in 628 career regular season contests with the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres, registering 193 goals and 271 assists for 464 points, along with 352 penalty minutes. He has reached the 20-goal mark in seven of eight NHL seasons and surpassed the 50-point mark six times in his career.

In 1998-99, he won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie after finishing the season third among first-year players with 20 goals. He also recorded a career-high 47 assists in 1999-00. In Stanley Cup Playoff action, Drury has appeared in 114 career contests with Colorado and Buffalo, registering 43 goals and 38 assists for 81 points, along with 34 penalty minutes. He captured a Stanley Cup Championship with the Avalanche in 2000-01, appearing in all 23 postseason contests and collecting 16 points (11 goals and five assists). His 11 goals in the 2001 playoffs ranked second in the NHL.

Prior to turning professional, Drury skated in 155 career games with Boston University of Hockey East (HE), recording 113 goals and 101 assists for 214 points. He won the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player in 1998, was runner-up for the Hobey Baker Award in 1997 and was a finalist for the award in 1996. Drury finished his college career first all-time in goals (113) and third in points (214) in Boston University history.

Internationally, Drury has represented the United States in several tournaments. Most recently, he wore his country's colors at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, where he collected three assists in six games and shared the team-lead in plus/minus (plus-two). He was a member of the United States squad that won silver at the 2002 Olympics and also participated in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, the World Championships in 2004, 1998 and 1997, and the World Junior Championships in 1996.

The Trumbull, Conn., native was originally a third round choice of the Quebec Nordiques, 72nd overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Additionally, Drury competed in the 1989 Little League World Series for Trumbull and was the winning pitcher against Taiwan.
