Ducks Sign Mathieu Schneider

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed free-agent defenseman Mathieu Schneider to a two-year contract.

Schneider is the NHL's active leader among defensemen in goals (200) and points (663), while ranking second in assists (463) and third in games played (1,132). The 38-year-old (6/12/69) blueliner competed in his 19th season in the NHL last season, his fourth with Detroit. Schneider played in 68 games during the 2006-2007 season, scoring 11-41=52 points with 66 penalty minutes (PIM) and a plus/minus rating of +12. In 11 playoff games in 2007, the New York, New York native scored 2-4=6 points with 12 PIM and had a +4 rating. Schneider had the longest point streak among all NHL defensemen in 2006-07, scoring 2-13=15 points in 12 games from Nov. 27 through Dec. 22.

A two-time NHL All-Star (1996 & 2003) and two-time member of the US Olympic Team (1998 & 2006), Schneider has played in 103 career playoff games, scoring 9-43=52 points. The 5-10, 192-pound defenseman was a member of the 1993 Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Canadiens and was a First Team NHL All-Star in 1988 & 1989. With Detroit in 2005-06, Schneider set career highs in goals (21) and points (59). He has appeared in the NHL with Montreal, the New York Islanders, Toronto, the New York Rangers, Los Angeles and Detroit.

Schneider was originally drafted by Montreal in third round (44th overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. On April 5, 1995, he was traded to the New York Islanders with Kirk Muller and Craig Darby in exchange for Pierre Turgeon and Vladimir Malakhov. On March 13, 1996, he was traded to Toronto with Wendel Clark and D.J. Smith in exchange for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonsson and Toronto's 1st round choice (Roberto Luongo) in 1997 NHL Entry Draft. On Oct. 14, 1998, Schneider's rights were traded to the New York Rangers in exchange for Alexander Karpovtsev and the Rangers' fourth-round selection in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. On June 23, 2000, he was claimed by Columbus from the New York Rangers in the Expansion Draft but he was signed as a free agent by Los Angeles on August 14, 2000. On March 11, 2003, he was traded to Detroit in exchange for Sean Avery, Maxim Kuznetsov, Detroit's first-round choice (Jeff Tambellini) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and Detroit's second-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
