Thrashers Sign Stoesz, Pavelec, Denny and Pospisil

Atlanta, GA -- The Atlanta Thrashers have signed four of their 2005 NHL Entry Draft selections; goaltender Ondrej Pavelec (2nd round, 41st overall- pictured above on right), defenseman Chad Denny (2nd round, 49th overall- pictured above on left) and forwards Tomas Pospisil (5th round, 135th overall) and Myles Stoesz (7th round, 207th overall), according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.
Pavelec, 19, led all Quebec Major Junior Hockey League goaltenders in goals-against average (2.52), ranked third in save percentage (.908) and was tied for fifth in wins (28), in 43 games for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles this season. The 6-2, 210-pound goaltender also appeared in 16 playoff games, recording 11 wins, a 2.29 GAA and a .920 save percentage. He earned the QMJHL’s Jacques Plante Trophy, given annually to the goaltender with the lowest GAA, for the second consecutive season and was chosen as a QMJHL First Team All-Star.
In 2005-06, Pavelec was named the QMJHL Rookie-of-the-Year as well as Defensive Rookie-of-the-Year after leading all rookies in wins (27), shutouts (three), games played (47), shots (1,515) and saves (1,407). The native of Kladno, Czech Republic was also chosen as a First Team All-Star and was a First Team All-Rookie selection.
Pavelec completed his two-year stint in Cape Breton with a 55-29 record, a 2.52 GAA and four shutouts in 90 career QMJHL regular-season games. In addition, he compiled a 15-10 record with a 2.27 GAA and two shutouts in 25 post-season appearances. Prior to coming to North America, Pavelec played from 2003-05 with Kladno in the Czech Republic. He also represented his country at the 2007 World Junior Championship in Sweden and the 2005 World Under-18 Championships, held in the Czech Republic.
Denny, 20, finished sixth among QMJHL defensemen with 65 points (17 goals, 48 assists) in 59 games with the Lewiston MAINEiacs this season. The 6-3, 230-pound defenseman led his team in assists and ranked third in points, both career highs, while helping the MAINEiacs capture the QMJHL championship and advance to the Memorial Cup Tournament, the Canadian Hockey League’s championship. In 17 playoff games, Denny tallied 19 points (10 goals, nine assists), ranking second among league defensemen in goals and tied for second in points. Denny, a native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, has recorded 147 points (47 goals, 100 assists) in 215 games in four seasons with Lewiston.
Pospisil, 19, finished this season with 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists) in 55 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting. The 6-0, 185-pound forward finished fifth on the Sting in points, tied for third in goals and tied for second in power-play goals. The native of Sumperk, Czech Republic recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in four playoff games for the Sting. In two seasons with Sarnia, Pospisil recorded 122 points (54 goals, 68 assists) in 155 games. Prior to his North American career, he spent three seasons playing for HC Trinec in his native Czech Republic.
Stoesz, 20, split the 2006-07 season between the Chilliwack Bruins and Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League. The 6-2, 210-pound forward recorded five points (three goals, two assists) along with 135 penalty minutes in 40 games with the Bruins and registered six points (four goals, two assists) and 89 penalty minutes in 29 games for the Pats this season. He was held scoreless in nine post-season contests with the Pats, recording 21 penalty minutes. The native of Steinbach, Manitoba notched 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists) and 855 penalty minutes in 235 career WHL games over four seasons with Chilliwack, Regina and the Spokane Chiefs.
