Islanders Sign Dustin Kohn to Three-Year Entry Level Contract

The Islanders have signed 2005 second round draft pick Dustin Kohn to a three-year entry level contract. The 20-year old defenseman from Edmonton, AB scored five goals and added 45 assists for 50 points in 61 games this season for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League.
The 6-1, 190-pound Kohn led Brandon in points from the blueline in 2006-07 and had the best plus/minus rating on the team with a +23 mark. His 45 assists ranked him tied for 16th in the WHL this past season while his 27 power play helpers ranked him tied for 12th in the league.
"Dustin has all the tools of an NHL-caliber defenseman," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "Now that Bruno Gervais and Chris Campoli have developed within our system to become effective players in the NHL, Dustin is one of our prospects on the blueline who could eventually be next."
Splitting his WHL career between the Calgary Hitmen and Brandon, Kohn played in a total of 253 games, scoring 20 goals with 111 assists for 131 points while recording 201 penalty minutes.
Kohn has already spent time with the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate in Bridgeport, playing in two regular season games at the end of the 2005-06 season. The Wheat Kings' advancement into the 2007 WHL playoffs, where he scored a goal and eight assists for nine points in 11 games, prevented him from joining the Sound Tigers this season.
Kohn, selected 46th overall in 2005, will participate in his third training camp with the Islanders this September, when the Islanders head to Moncton, NB.
