Las Vegas Wranglers Capture 2006-07 Brabham Cup
Sunday, Apr. 8th, 2007
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Las Vegas Wranglers have captured the 2006-07 Brabham Cup with 106 points, finishing one point ahead of the Alaska Aces.
The Brabham Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the ECHL team that finishes with the most points in the regular season. The recipient is guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout its participation in the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The award is named in recognition of Henry Brabham, who was a founding member of the ECHL and the first owner of the Erie Panthers. A former mayor and businessman who was a major force in professional hockey in Virginia for more than 15 years, Brabham worked tirelessly to establish the ECHL during its early years.
Scoring two goals in the third period for a 2-1 win against Stockton in front of 6,844 at the Orleans Arena on Saturday, the Wranglers extended their winning streak to 13 games and finished the regular season with a 46-12-14 record. The 13-game streak breaks the team record of 12 games (Dec. 3-28, 2005). The longest winning streak in ECHL history is 14 games by Knoxville (Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994) and tied by Louisiana (Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2001).
Las Vegas and Alaska are the second and third teams, respectively, in ECHL history to score 100 points in back-to-back seasons. The pair joins Trenton which won the Brabham Cup in 2000-01 with 104 points and finished second in 2001-02 with 102 points. Alaska won the Brabham Cup a year ago with 113 points, finishing one point ahead of Las Vegas as the two had the second-highest and third-highest point totals in league history.
Las Vegas’ 106 points ties it with Wheeling (2003-04) and Pee Dee (1998-99) for the eighth-most points in league history while Alaska’s 105 points is tied for 11th with Richmond (1995-96). There have been 22 teams that have reached 100 points in a season and the most teams to achieve the century mark in a season is five in 2005-06 (Alaska, Las Vegas, Gwinnett, Florida and Fresno).
