Panthers Trade Bertuzzi to Detroit
Tuesday, Feb. 27th, 2007
SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin announced today that the club has acquired C Shawn Matthias and conditional draft considerations in the 2007 and 2008 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for RW Todd Bertuzzi.
"Shawn is a very skilled young player who was one of the top rated players in Detroit's system," Martin said. "He is another high character player who possesses great speed with a scoring touch. We also were able to gain draft picks that we will be able to utilize in order to acquire key assets in future drafts. Additionally, this move also gives us flexibility in being active during the off-season when we look at acquiring free-agents throughout the summer."
Matthias has spent the last three years playing in the Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls. This season the 6-foot-3, 210-pound center has scored 33 goals with 28 assists in 57 games played. The Red Wings originally drafted Matthias with their second choice (47th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
