Capitals Acquire Hedlund, Sixth-Round Pick for Nycholat

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Andy Hedlund and a sixth-round draft pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Hedlund, 28, has spent the 2006-07 season with the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League (AHL). He has seen action in 56 games, tallying five goals, 21 assists and 84 penalty minutes. The 6’2”, 216-pound native of Osseo, Minn., was acquired by Ottawa as a free agent on June 19, 2006. Hedlund spent the 2005-06 season playing professionally in Germany and will be assigned to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

Nycholat, 27, was called up from the Hershey on Dec. 23, 2006, and played in 18 games for the Capitals this season. He registered two goals, six assists and averaged 20:31 of ice time per game. Nycholat was an integral member of the Bears run to the Calder Cup championship last season, as he netted 13 goals and 44 assists in 73 regular-season games. A 5’11”, 200-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, Nycholat made his NHL debut in 2003-04, playing nine games with the New York Rangers.

With the Ottawa Senators’ sixth-round selection, the Capitals now have eight selections in the first six rounds of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
