Oilers Sign Staios to Four-Year Extension

Tuesday, Nov. 21st, 2006

The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Steve Staios to a four-year contract extension that will run through the 2010-11 season.

Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe says, "Steve exemplifies what it means to be an Edmonton Oiler and we couldnt be happier with this long-term extension. He is one of those players who leads by example and will do everything it takes to accomplish the task at hand."

Staios has scored a goal and eight assists in 20 games for the Oilers this season and is tied for the scoring lead among Edmonton defencemen with Daniel Tjarnqvist. The 6'1", 200-pound native of Hamilton, Ontario leads the Oilers in penalty minutes (50), blocked shots (55) and is second in hits (22), plus/minus (+4) and ice time, averaging 21:44 minutes per game. His 55 blocked shots ranks him fifth in the NHL.

The 33-year-old defenceman joined the Oilers as a free agent on July 12, 2001 and has scored 25-76-101 with 424 penalty minutes in 333 career games with Edmonton. He scored his 100th career Oilers point with a powerplay assist at Colorado on November 13th.

Staios enters tonight's game versus the Calgary Flames with a streak of 223 consecutive games played dating back to January 11, 2003.
