Wings Place Norton on IR, Recall Filppula
Thursday, Oct. 19th, 2006
Detroit, MI - The Detroit Red Wings recalled center Valtteri Filppula from the team's Grand Rapids affiliate today. The 22 year-old Finnish player will replace defenseman Brad Norton, who was placed on injured reserve.
Norton suffered a shoulder injury during the third period of Wednesday's 4-1 loss at Anaheim. The injury occurred during a fight with the Ducks' Shane O'Brien. Norton's four fighting majors lead the league in that category.
In two games with the Griffins this season, Filppula has a goal and an assist, extending his franchise-record point streak to 10 consecutives games, dating back to last season.
Filppula, who made his NHL debut last season to become the first Finnish player ever to play for Detroit, wasn't available for action in the Wings' game Thursday at San Jose.
