Thursday, Sep. 21st, 2006
TORONTO/NHLPA – Brian Savage, a dependable winger with the Montreal Canadiens, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers announced his retirement today from the National Hockey League (NHL).
Savage, 35, appeared in a total of 647 regular season NHL games recording 192 goals and 167 assists for 359 points.
“I was very fortunate to be able to play 12 years in the NHL with some great players,” said Savage. “Having the chance to represent my country four times is something that I will not forget and the highlight of my career was playing in the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. I’m now looking forward to my post-playing future.”
Before beginning his professional hockey career, Savage had a successful career in the NCAA at Miami of Ohio. Savage was selected to the CCHA First All-Star Team in 1993, awarded CCHA Player of the Year in 1993 and NCAA West Second All-American Team 1993.
Following college, Savage joined the Canadian National Team program and helped Team Canada win a silver-medal at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Savage was also a member of Team Canada at the 1993 and 1999 World Hockey Championships and helped Team Canada win gold in 1992 at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.
“When I came into the league I joined a line with Brian and Mark Recchi and we had a lot of success together. Brian was always very easy for me to find on the ice and being a good goal scorer he really knew where to be positioned. Off the ice, I think of Brian as more of a close friend than a former teammate, and I will always be in touch with him.” said Saku Koivu, Brian’s teammate in Montreal for 7 seasons.
Brian has always been very active in the community throughout his career. The past June, Brian held the 10th annual Brian Savage Charity Golf Classic which has raised over $450,000 to help underprivileged children through the Ten Rainbows Children’s Foundation in Sudbury Ontario.
Brian and his wife Debbie have two sons, Ryan and Redmond and they will continue to reside in Sudbury and Scottsdale, Arizona.
