Sharks Sign Bell and Ehrhoff

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed Mark Bell to a three-year contract and Group II restricted free agent defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a two-year deal.
Bell was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on July 9 in exchange for defenseman Tom Preissing and center Josh Hennessy.
Bell, 25, finished second on the Blackhawks in scoring last season, setting new career-highs with 48 points (25 goals, 23 assists) and added 107 penalty minutes while playing in all 82 games for the third consecutive season. It was the second consecutive 20+ goal campaign for the power forward in four full NHL seasons, each of which he recorded over 100 penalty minutes. In addition, he led the team in power play goals (11) and shots (225) in 2005-06.
Bell was second on Chicago with 10 multiple-point games and posted an eight-game scoring streak from Nov. 13 to Dec. 2 registering 14 points (nine goals, five assists). He played his 300th career game on Jan. 11 vs. Philadelphia …
The six-foot-four, 210-pound native of St. Paul’s, Ontario is primarily a left wing/center but can play all three forward positions. In 339 NHL games, all with Chicago, Bell has posted 151 points (72 goals, 79 assists) and 454 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by Chicago in the first round (8th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Ehrhoff joined San Jose last year for his second season, playing 64 games, averaging almost 18 minutes of ice-time per game. During the 2005-06 season, he established career high in points (23), assists (18) and goals (5), including two game-winning goals. One of those was scored against Vancouver on Apr. 12 in overtime to clinch a playoff berth for the Sharks. Ehrhoff finished the season tied for third among the team defensemen for points and tied a franchise record high 10 shots on net against Nashville during the Mar. 11 game.
The 23-year-old played in 11 playoff games, scoring twice and assisting six times. He averaged almost 20 minutes of on-ice time throughout the Sharks playoff run.
Erhoff joined teammate Marcel Goc in Turin, Italy to play in the Winter Olympics for Team Germany, where he registered one goal and one assist. Right before his Olympics stint, Ehrhoff was on a career-high five game streak for assists (1-5=6) from Feb. 6 – Feb. 28.
Ehrhoff played 27 games with the Cleveland Barons before joining the Sharks on Oct. 9, 2003 against Edmonton. In Cleveland, Ehrhoff has four goals and 10 assists, was second on the team for playoff scoring and points and led the Barons in shots with 36. During his time with in Cleveland, Ehrhoff also participated in the World Cup of Hockey in 2003, playing four games for Team Germany.
The six-foot-two, 195-pound native of Moers, Germany was selected by San Jose in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
