Canucks Sign Edler, Hansen, Heshka and Rullier

Vancouver, B.C., Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Alexander Edler, forward Jannik Hansen, defenceman Shaun Heshka and defenceman Joe Rullier.

Edler, 20, has signed his first pro contract after being drafted in the third round, 91st overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. After spending three seasons playing in Sweden, Edler was drafted by the Kelowna Rockets in the first round of the 2005 CHL Import Draft. In the 2005-06 season, the 6-foot-3, 212 pound defenceman played 62 games with the Rockets recording 13 goals, 40 assists (13-40-53), 44 penalty minutes and a plus 21 rating. He also saw time in 12 playoff games with the Rockets and notched eight points (3-5-8), 12 penalty minutes and a plus seven rating.

The Ostersund, Sweden native saw his first pro action as a 16-year-old playing for Jamtland of Division II Swedish Hockey. He became a regular on the team by 2003-04 and recorded nine points (3-6-9) in 24 games. In the 2004-05 season, Edler played for Modo of the Swedish Elite League where he tallied eight goals, 15 assists (8-15-23) and 40 penalty minutes in 33 games played.

Hansen, 20, has signed his first pro contract after being selected by Vancouver in the ninth round, 287th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Hansen spent the 2005-06 season with the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL. The 6-foot, 190 pound winger averaged a point per game last season, racking up 24 goals and 40 assists for 64 points in 64 games played along with 67 penalty minutes. In the post season, Hansen recorded 13 points (7-6-13), 16 penalty minutes, and a plus five in 12 games played.

Hansen is also a two-time member of the Denmark U18 national team. The Herlev, Denmark native made the transition to North American hockey in 2005 when he was chosen in the first round, 33rd overall, of the 2005 CHL Import Draft by the Portland Winter Hawks.

Heshka, 20, played the 2005-06 season with the Everett Silvertips, finishing second on the team in scoring and second among WHL defencemen in scoring with 59 points (10-49-59). Last season, the 6-foot-1, 195 pound defencemen received Western Conference Second All-Star Team honours and was named the Greyhound WHL Player of the Week for the week of January 9-15.

A native of Melville, Saskatchewan, Heshka currently holds the franchise record as the Silvertips second all-time leading scorer with 107 points (25-82-107), leader in assists (82) and leader in games played (204). Heshka also holds Everett’s single season record in assists with 49, established in 2005-06.

In his career with the Silvertips, Heshka served as Assistant Captain from 2004 to 2006. He was also honoured with the Silvertips Unsung Hero Award in 2003-04 in addition to the Silvertips Booster Club F.I.E.R.C.E. Predator Award and Ironman Award in 2004-05.

Rullier, 26, split the 2005-06 AHL season between the Manchester Monarchs and the Hartford Wolf Pack. In 16 games with the Monarchs the defenceman recorded three points (2-1-3) and 37 penalty minutes. With Hartford, Rullier tallied six goals, 22 assists (6-22-28) and 28 penalty minutes in 51 games played.

The 6’3”, 230 lbs, native of Montreal, Quebec was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth round, 133rd overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
