Thrashers Re-Sign Defenseman Mark Popovic and Forward Colin Stuart

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Mark Popovic and restricted free agent forward Colin Stuart, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Popovic, 23, split the 2005-06 season between the Thrashers and Chicago (AHL), going scoreless in seven games with Atlanta, and setting AHL career highs with 12 goals, 26 assists and 38 points in 73 games with the Wolves.

The 6-1, 210-pound defenseman is scoreless in eight NHL games with Anaheim and Atlanta, and has recorded 94 points (20 goals, 74 assists) in 294 AHL games with Cincinnati and Chicago from 2002-06. The native of Stoney Brook, Ontario,has played at least 70 AHL games four consecutive seasons.

Popovic, who was acquired by Atlanta from Anaheim for forward Kip Brennan on Aug. 23, 2005, was originally selected by the Ducks in the second round, 35th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Stuart, 24, played 78 games for Chicago (AHL) and set career highs with 13 goals, 14 assists and 27 points last season. The 6-2, 210-pound left wing tied for second on the Wolves with four shorthanded goals and also tallied one game-winner.

The native of Rochester, Minn., has recorded 32 points (16 goals, 16 assists), including five shorthanded tallies, in 117 AHL games over the past two seasons.

Prior to joining the Thrashers organization, Stuart played four years with Colorado College (WCHA), registering 77 points (38 goals, 39 assists) and 154 penalty minutes in 156 games. Stuart played in his first 135 consecutive games for the Tigers from Oct. 13, 2000-Nov. 7, 2003, including every game during his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

Stuart was selected by Atlanta in the fifth round, 135th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, and is among three brothers to play at Colorado College and be drafted by the NHL, including Mark (Nashville in fifth round in 2000) and Mike (Boston in the first round in the 2003).
