Red Wings Sign Dan Smith and Matt Hussey

Thursday, Jul. 13th, 2006

Detroit Red Wings General Manager Jim Nill today announced the team signed center Matt Hussey and defenseman Dan Smith to one-year contracts.

"Matt and Dan are players that will provide quality depth in our organization," said Nill. "Since the salary cap was put into place, the importance of adding value players has been magnified."

Hussey, 27, (5/28/79), registered one assist in 13 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005-06. He spent most of last season with Pittsburgh's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins. In 65 games he collected 51 points (21-30-51). Hussy was drafted by Pittsburgh in the ninth round (254 overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft after playing four seasons (1998-2002) with the University of Wisconsin in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The 29-year-old Smith saw action in seven games for the Edmonton Oilers in 2005-06. The remainder of the year he played for the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs and tallied 16 points (0-16-16) in 69 games. Smith began his career in the Colorado Avalanche system when the team selected him in the seventh round (181 overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He played 15 games with the Avalanche, before leaving the organization in 2001.
