NHLPA Executive Board Elects Five Players to Interim Executive Committee

Wednesday, Jul. 12th, 2006

Whistler, B.C. - The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) concluded its annual North American Summer Player Meetings in Whistler B.C. today with the Executive Board electing five players to serve as interim Executive Committee members. Kevyn Adams, Alyn McCauley, Wade Redden, Mathieu Schneider and Marty Turco will be joined by two European players to form the new interim committee.

Voting to fill the two European Vice-President positions currently held by Daniel Alfredsson (eligible for re-election) and formerly held by ArtursIrbe (retired) will be conducted at the upcoming European Player Meetings August 1-2 in Stockholm, Sweden. Following those meetings, the seven interim Executive Committee members will select an interim president from within the committee.

"The election of these players to the interim executive committee is encouraging for all NHLPA members," said Ted Saskin, NHLPA Executive Director. "All five were nominated by their peers because of their strong character and ability, and after the two European members are added, it will continue to be a productive summer for our membership."

The five North American players named to the interim committee replace Bob Boughner (retired), Vincent Damphousse (retired), Bill Guerin (did not run for re-election), and Trent Klatt (retired). Trevor Linden, with his 8 years as president marking the longest stretch in the NHLPA's history, chose not to run for re-election.

"I have great confidence in the guys selected for the new interim committee," said former president Trevor Linden. "They are all capable, intelligent, and committed and it is reassuring to know that such a solid group will be responsible for going forward."

In March, the NHLPA began review of our Constitution and recently formed a committee with players, NHLPA staff and outside counsel who have been given the mandate to put forward a revised constitution which will be voted on by the entire NHLPA membership. The current Executive Board felt it was important to respect this process and therefore elected the Executive Committee on an interim basis. This Executive Committee will function in its traditional capacity and its status will be addressed once the players have voted on a new Constitution.
