Atlanta Thrashers Re-Sign Scott Mellanby

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed Team Captain Scott Mellanby for the 2006-07 season, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.
"Scott is a tremendous leader who will continue to play an important role on our club next season," said Waddell. "Over the course of his career, including his time in Atlanta, he has proven himself as a high-character individual who knows what it takes to be successful on and off the ice. His dedication and talent will contribute to helping us reach the playoffs.”
Mellanby, who was named the fifth captain in team history on Sept. 27, 2005, ranked eighth on the Thrashers with 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) in 71 games last season. He completed his 20th season in the NHL and reached some memorable milestones, including his 800th career point on April 8. In addition, he became the 35th player in NHL history to appear in 1,300 games on October 25. The team posted a 19-4-1 record when he recorded a point, and was 9-1-0 when he tallied a goal. Mellanby was nominated for the NHL’s Masterton Trophy, an annual award given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. This was his second nomination for the award following his selection to represent St. Louis, while playing for the Blues in 2002-03 where he served as an alternate captain.
The 6-1, 210-pound right wing has led his team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 11 out of 20 seasons, notching 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists) and 216 penalty minutes in 132 career playoff contests. Mellanby made trips to the Stanley Cup Finals with Philadelphia in 1987 and Florida in 1996. He also helped St. Louis advance to the 2001 Western Conference Finals against Colorado. He helped Edmonton reach the 1992 Campbell Conference Finals against Chicago, and led the Flyers to the 1989 Wales Conference Finals against Montreal.
The native of Montreal, Quebec, has registered 804 points (352 goals, 452 assists) and 2,416 penalty minutes in 1,363 NHL regular-season games with Philadelphia, Edmonton, Florida, St. Louis and Atlanta. Of Mellanby’s 352 career goals, 135 have come on the power play and 51 have been game-winners. He has recorded at least 40 points in a season on 11 occasions, including 50 points or more seven times. He's also tallied 20 or more goals in a season eight times, and has reached at least 20 assists on 13 occasions. He currently ranks 29th on NHL's all-time games list with 1,362 and has played in 70 or more regular-season games 13 times in career, including 80 or more on four occasions.
Mellanby, who served as Panthers’ team captain for four consecutive seasons from 1997-2001, remains Florida’s all-time leader with 157 goals, 66 power-play tallies and 354 points. He also ranks second on the team’s all-time list with 229 assists, and made his lone NHL All-Star Game appearance as a Panther in 1996.
The 40-year-old forward has never played a game in the minor leagues since making the jump to the NHL with Philadelphia late in the 1985-86 season following his sophomore season at the University of Wisconsin. Mellanby, who was selected by the Flyers in the second round, 27th overall, in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, helped Canada capture the silver medal at the 1986 World Junior Championships, notching nine points (five goals, four assists) in seven games.
