Thrashers Claim Rico Fata from Pittsburgh

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers have claimed forward Rico Fata on waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Fata will not join the team in time for tonight's game. The team's active roster now stands at 22, with one player on Injured Reserve.

Fata (pronounced FA-tuh) was scoreless in 20 games with the Penguins this season. The 6-0, 205-pound center has earned 54 points (23 goals, 31 assists) and 90 penalty minutes in 193 NHL games with Calgary, the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh. Fata, 25, played for Asiago in the Italian league in 2004-05, notching 38 points (18 goals, 20 assists) in 35 contests.

The native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, set career highs with 16 goals, 18 assists and 34 points in 73 games with the Penguins in 2003-04. Fata was originally selected by Calgary in the first round, sixth overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, and spent three seasons with the Flames organization from 1998-2001. Fata spent two seasons in the New York Rangers organization from 2001-03, notching six points (two goals, four assists) in 46 contests with the Rangers.
