Thrashers Place Peter Bondra and Steve Shields on IR

The Atlanta Thrashers have placed forward Peter Bondra (retroactive to Dec. 4) and goaltender Steve Shields (retroactive to Nov. 25) on injured reserve, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. The team’s active roster now stands at 21, with an additional four players on Injured Reserve.
Bondra suffered a groin/abdominal injury in Saturday’s game at Anaheim and has missed the past two games. The 6-1, 200-pound right wing ranks fourth on the Thrashers with 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) in 27 games this season, and ranks third in goals and fifth in assists.
The 37-year-old Bondra is just 10 goals away from becoming the 35th player in league history to reach 500 goals, and is currently 10th among active players with 490 goals. Bondra, who was born in Luck Ukraine, and raised in Slovakia, has earned 867 points (490 goals, 377 assists) in 1,011 NHL games with Washington, Ottawa and Atlanta. He skated in his 1,000th NHL game with the Thrashers against Tampa Bay on Nov. 11.
Shields, 33, who has missed 13 out of the past 15 games with a knee injury, has notched a 1-2-1 record and a 4.29 goals-against average in five games with the Thrashers this season. Shields, who missed six games with a knee injury from Nov. 9-19, re-aggravated the injury against the New York Rangers on Nov. 24. The native of Toronto, Ontario, earned a 1-1-0 record, 1.47 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in two games with Chicago (AHL) this season before signing with Atlanta as an unrestricted free agent on Oct. 27.
The 6-3, 215-pound goaltender has notched a 80-104-40 record, 10 shutouts and a 2.67 GAA in 246 NHL games over 10 seasons with Buffalo, San Jose, Anaheim, Boston, Florida and Atlanta.
