GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have signed left wing Steve Gainey to a one-year contract. Barnett also announced that Gainey has been recalled from the San Antonio Rampage, the Coyotes’ top minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound forward currently ranks tied for 14th in the entire AHL in scoring with 6-6-12 and 10 penalty minutes (PIM) in 12 games with San Antonio. Gainey leads all Rampage players in goals and points, and ranks tied for 1st on the club in assists. His 3 power play goals this season are second on the club.

Gainey, 25, has played in 13 NHL games (0-1-1 and 14 PIM) all with the Dallas Stars split over parts of three seasons. He made his NHL debut in the 2000-01 season, then played in 5 NHL games in 2001-02 and set an NHL career high in games played with 7 in 2003-04. Gainey was then traded by Dallas to Philadelphia in exchange for Mike Siklenka on Feb. 16, 2004 but did not play in any games with the Flyers.

Since turning pro in 1999-2000, his best season came in 2001-02 when he recorded 16-18-34 and 87 PIM in 58 games with the Utah Grizzlies (AHL). Last season, Gainey played in 30 games in France with Epinal, tallying 10-13-23 and 97 PIM.

The Montreal, Quebec native was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 3rd round (77th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He played his junior career with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In his final season (1998-99) with Kamloops, Gainey collected 30-34-64 and 155 PIM in 68 games.
