The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed restricted free agent left wing Ilya Kovalchuk to a multi-year deal, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

“Ilya is an important part of our franchise and we share in our fans excitement that he is back with us for many seasons to come,” said Waddell. “He is one of the league’s elite players and will play an integral part in helping us take that next step. We already have a very good team in place and Ilya will bolster our lineup and play a pivotal role in our success. We are determined to build a team Atlanta can be proud of and this is another example of the tremendous support we have received from our owners.”

The 22-year-old left wing is the Thrashers all-time leader with 108 goals, 205 points, 46 multiple-point games, 70 power-play points, 32 power-play goals, 133 even-strength points and 75 even strength goals in 227 games. He shares the franchise lead with 13 multiple-goal games and 13 game-winning tallies, and ranks third in assists.

The native of Tver, Russia, notched career highs to lead the Thrashers with 87 points, 41 goals and 46 assists in 2003-04, and shared the NHL's Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for most goals with Jarome Iginla (Calgary) and Rick Nash (Columbus). He led the NHL with career-best 341 shots, ranked second in points, shared third with 16 power-play goals and was tied for eighth with 33 power-play points that season.

The 6-2, 220-pound forward was named a 2003-04 NHL Second Team All-Star, earned a spot on the 2003-04 All-Star Team by The Hockey News, and was selected as the 2003-04 POWERade/NHL Outstanding Player of Year in fan voting. He was named POWERade/NHL Outstanding Player of the Month for October 2003, and received the most All-Star Game votes by fans to be selected to starting lineup for Eastern Conference Team at the 2004 NHL All-Star Game.

“I’m excited to return to Atlanta and look forward to getting back on the ice and helping my teammates,” said Kovalchuk. “We have a lot of offensive talent and I can’t wait to contribute and help lead this team to the next level.”

Kovalchuk ranks fourth among all NHL players with 79 goals since the 2002-03 season and is ninth with 154 points (79 goals, 75 assists) in that span. He played for AK Bars Kazan of the Russian Elite League in 2004-05, and finished seventh in the league and second on his club with 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists) in 53 games. He also ranked second on the team in goals and assists.

Kovalchuk has represented Russia in international competition on 11 occasions, including the past three World Championships, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2002 Winter Olympics. He led Russia to the bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships in Vienna and Innsbruck, Austria, notching six points (three goals, three assists) in nine games.
