Penguins Re-Sign Defenseman Josef Melichar

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Josef Melichar, it was announced today by Penguins General Manager Craig Patrick.
Melichar, 26, has appeared in 168 National Hockey League games – all for Pittsburgh – in his career, recording 13 points (3+10) and 153 penalty minutes. He was one of only four players to appear in all 82 games with the Penguins during the 2003-04 season, posting a career high eight points (3+5) and 62 penalty minutes. Melichar played in his 100th NHL game on November 12, 2003 against the New York Rangers. He also tallied his first NHL goal during the 2003-04 season, beating John Grahame of the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 27.
The 6-2, 220 pound Melichar played in 13 games during the 2004-05 season with HC Sparta Praha in the Czech League, recording four assists and eight penalty minutes.
Melichar, a native of Ceske-Budejovice, Czech Republic, was drafted by the Penguins in the third round (71st overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
