Canadiens Sign Ribeiro, Komisarek and Halak

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey today announced the signing of forward Mike Ribeiro and defenceman Mike Komisarek to one-year contracts (2005-06), as well as goaltender Jaroslav Halak to a 3-year contract (2005-06 to 2007-08).
“Mike Ribeiro demonstrated during the 2003-04 season how much of a force he can be. His creativity, his passing skills and his vision make him one of the key components of our offense, said Bob Gainey. Mike Komisarek ended the 2004-05 season on a very positive note with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Using his skills and his physical presence, he has the potential to be a very good all-around player. As for Halak, he made a remarkable impression in his first season in North America. He has an excellent work ethic and could become an excellent goaltender in the years to come ’’.
Ribeiro, 25, played in 17 games with the Espoo Blues in the Finland Hockey League in 2004-05. He recorded 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists). The 6’00’’, 177 pound native of Montreal led the Canadiens in scoring with 65 points in 81 games in 2003-04 (20 goals, 45 assists). Ribeiro was a Canadiens’ second round pick, 45th overall in 1998.
Komisarek, 23, played in 20 games with the Bulldogs in 2004-05. He recorded five points (1 goal, 4 assists) and 49 penalty minutes. The 6’04’’, 237 pound defenceman played in 46 games with the Canadiens in 2003-04 (4 assists). Komisarek was the Canadiens’ first round pick, 7th overall in 2001.
Halak, 20, played in 62 regular season games with Lewiston in the QMJHL in 2004-2005. He posted a (24-17-4) record with a 2.78 GAA and a .913 saving percentage. Halak (5’11’’, 171 pound) represented Team Slovakia at the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championship. He posted a 2.16 GAA and a .917 save percentage in six contests (4-2). The Bratislava, Slovakia native was a Canadiens’ 9th round pick, 271st overall in the 2003 NHL draft.
