New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Marek Malik.
“Marek is a big, strong defenseman who adds a physical presence to our blueline,” stated Sather. “His size and skill will bolster our penalty killing unit. He also provides our team with strong leadership and he will be able to work well with our young prospects.”
Malik, 30, appeared in 42 games with HC Vitkovice Steel in the Czech Republic Extraleague (Czech) last season, registering one goal and nine assists for 10 points, along with 50 penalty minutes. His nine assists ranked second among all Vitkovice defensemen, while his 10 points were third among team blueliners. In seven post-season contests, Malik collected 37 penalty minutes, which tied for second on the club. The Ostrava, Czech Republic native was also a member of the Czech Republic team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
A veteran of nine NHL seasons with the Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks, Malik has skated in 464 career NHL games, registering 27 goals and 87 assists for 114 points, along with 388 penalty minutes. As a member of the Hartford/Carolina organization, he recorded 17 goals and 60 assists for 77 points, along with 291 penalty minutes in 317 contests. His best professional season came in 2001-02, when he charted career highs in games played (82), assists (19), points (23) and penalty minutes (88).
The 6-5, 235-pounder has also appeared in 51 career playoff contests with the Hurricanes and Canucks, registering one goal and four assists for five points, along with 48 penalty minutes. In addition, Malik was a key member of Carolina’s 2001-02 Eastern Conference championship team, appearing in 23 post-season contests and collecting three assists and 18 penalty minutes.
In 1997-98, Malik opted to return to Europe for the year, skating in 37 contests with Malmo of the Swedish Elite League (Swe), registering one goal and five assists for six points, along with 21 penalty minutes.
