ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Senior Vice President & General Manager Larry Pleau today announced the club has signed unrestricted free agent right wing Aaron Downey to a one-year contract.

“We are pleased to add Aaron Downey to the St. Louis Blues for the 2005-06 season. He brings a high-energy, physical style of play to our team,” said Pleau. “Aaron finishes his checks and immediately will inject enthusiasm into our lineup and provide fans with a fun and exciting brand of hockey.”

Downey, 30, has spent the previous two NHL seasons with the Dallas Stars and tallied a career-high 77 penalty minutes in 37 games during the 2003-04 campaign. The Shelburne, Ontario native led the American Hockey League in penalty minutes for the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons, playing for the Providence Bruins. In 1998-99 he was a key ingredient as the Bruins captured the AHL’s Calder Cup Championship. He made his NHL debut on March 30, 2000 against St. Louis.

The 6-1, 216-pound right forward was originally signed by the Boston Bruins as a free agent on January 20, 1998.
