Predators Sign Center Greg Johnson

Thursday, Jul. 28th, 2005

Nashville, Tenn. - Nashville Predators Executive Vice President/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed center Greg Johnson.

Johnson, 34 (3/16/71), is the Predators' all-time franchise leader in games played (434), and ranks among all-time team leaders in goals (second with 82), assists (fourth with 137) and points (third with 219). He was the first player to appear in over 400 games and post over 200 points as a Predator. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native is one of only three 1998 expansion-draft selections remaining on the Predators (along with Tomas Vokoun and Scott Walker).

Johnson captained Nashville to its first NHL playoff appearance in the spring of 2004. Nashville's top defensive center and top face-off pivot (885-722, 55%), he also set a franchise record in 2003-04 with four shorthanded goals. In the organization's first playoff series (Conference Quarterfinals vs. Detroit), Johnson led the Predators with a +4 rating and tied for the team lead with three points (1g-2a). The 2003-04 season was his second campaign as team captain.

Away from the rink, Johnson is extremely active in the Middle Tennessee community. He has spearheaded the team's "Stick to Reading=Succeeding" program, visiting Middle Tennessee schools, reading to students and speaking about the importance of literacy. In 2002, Johnson was selected as the Predators' inaugural Chevy Trucks "Man of the Year," awarded to the player who most exemplifies his commitment to Nashville and Middle Tennessee through his outstanding community service.
