Nicolas Petan Named WHL Player of the Week

Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks' forward Nicolas Petan is the Denny's WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 27, 2014.

Petan scored three goals and four assists for seven points along with an even +/- rating over three games this past week, leading the Winterhawks to three victories over the Kelowna Rockets as they captured the 2014 WHL Western Conference championship.

On Tuesday, April 22, Petan recorded a pair of assists in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Rockets in Game 3 of the best-of-seven series in Portland. On Wednesday, April 23, Petan scored three power play goals, including the game-winner, and was named the game's 1st Star in a 5-1 victory over the visiting Rockets in Game 4. On Friday, April 25, Petan picked up two assists in a 7-3 series-clinching victory over the Rockets in Game 5 in Kelowna.

Petan, an 18-year-old from Delta, B.C, is in his third season in the WHL with the Winterhawks. The 5'9", 173-lb center has appeared in 198 career WHL regular-season games for Portland, piling up 95 goals and 174 assists for 269 points. Portland's first pick, 16th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Petan has also amassed 16 goals and 49 points in 64 career post-season games. Petan was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
