Oilers Sign Martin Gernat to Entry-Level Contract

General Manager Craig MacTavish announced today the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Martin Gernat on a three-year entry level contract.

Gernat, 20, has played two seasons in the Western Hockey League, leading all Oil Kings rookies in scoring in 2011-12, registering 55 points (9G, 46A) and a team leading plus 41 rating. The rearguard also helped the team to the 2012 WHL Championship and Edmonton's first Memorial Cup appearance in modern day franchise history.

The 65, 191-pound defenceman played 23 games this year after returning from a shoulder injury in January. He posted 13 points (3G, 10A) and was plus eight. In 11 playoff games, Gernat has recorded 12 points (4G, 8A) and is plus 14.

The Kosice, Slovakia native has represented his country internationally at the 2011 World Under-18 Hockey Championship and the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship.

The Oilers selected Gernat in the 5th round, 122nd overall in the 2011 NHL Draft.
