Flames Claim Blake Comeau Off Waivers, Assign Paul Byron to Abbotsford

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the acquisition of forward Blake Comeau who was claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders.

The Flames also assigned forward Paul Byron to the Abbotsford Heat (AHL).

“"Blake is a smart, committed, two-way hockey player who kills penalties, is responsible defensively and can score some goals as well,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We have liked this player for a long time, and our scouts and staff are convinced a change is going to be good for him. We are excited to add him to our club without having to give up an asset."

Comeau is coming off career highs in goals (24), assists (22), points (46), and games played (77) last season with the Islanders. In addition, he notched five powerplay goals and three game winners. The 25 year old native of Meadow Lake, SK has played 261 career games, all with the Islanders, recording 121 points. Drafted by the New York Islanders in the 2nd round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (47th Overall), Comeau played four seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL, capturing a Memorial Cup championship in 2004. He also represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in Vancouver, where he helped the team to the Gold Medal with three goals and four assists for seven points in six games to lead Canada in scoring.

Byron, a native of Ottawa, Ontario recorded 2 goals in 6 games with the Flames this season. He has three goals and one assist along with 26 penalty minutes in nine games with the Abbotsford Heat. Last season he played eight NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres netting his first career goal and added one assist and two penalty minutes.
