Islanders Send Ryan Strome to Niagara

UNIONDALE, NY – The New York Islanders announced today that Ryan Strome has been assigned to the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

The Islanders selected Strome in the first round, fifth overall, of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Mississauga, ON, native played in three preseason games for the Islanders.

Strome finished third in Ontario Hockey League scoring last season with 106 points (33 goals 73 assists) in 65 games, helping lead Niagara to a franchise-best 45 wins and 96 points. He was voted the Most Improved Player and Best Playmaker in the OHL Eastern Conference Coaches Poll. Strome also added 12 points (6g/6a) in 14 playoff games with Niagara and was named to the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Strome split his first OHL season between the Barrie Colts and Niagara, totaling 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 61 games. The 6’0, 177-pound forward won a silver medal with Team Ontario at the 2010 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Timmins. On the international stage, he attended the 2011 Canadian Junior Evaluation Camp.
