Teemu Selanne Returns to the Anaheim Ducks

Thursday, Sep. 15th, 2011

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed right wing Teemu Selanne to a one-year contract through the 2011-12 NHL season.

“As he showed again last season, Teemu still has the drive, determination, and skill to play at an elite level,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “Most importantly for us, his passion comes from not just playing, but playing for the Ducks.”

Selanne, 41 (7/3/70), appeared in 73 games for the Ducks last season, scoring 31-49=80 points with a +6 rating and 49 penalty minutes (PIM). Selanne ranked third in the NHL with 16 power play goals and tied for eighth in overall scoring. Only two players in NHL history age 40-or-older have recorded more points: Detroit’s Gordie Howe in 1968-69 (103 pts., 40 yrs, 276 days) and Boston’s Johnny Bucyk in 1975-76 (83 pts., 40 yrs, 234 days).

“I’m very happy that my knee has recovered from surgery and is ready for the season,” said Selanne. “I’m excited and optimistic about what this team can do and thankful to have another opportunity to play in Anaheim.”

Selanne was one of 15 NHL players to average more than one point-per-game in 2010-11, finishing eighth with 1.21. Of his 31 goals, 25 came in a tied or one-goal contest. On Mar. 28, 2011 vs. Colorado, Selanne became the first NHL player 40-or-older to score three goals and five points (3-2=5) in a single game and the fourth-oldest to record a three-plus goal game (also Howe, Bucyk and Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom). Selanne also became the first player in NHL history with four game-tying goals in the final three minutes of the third period in a single season.

In 1,259 career NHL games, Selanne has scored 637-703=1,340 points, ranking 14th in all-time goals, 27th in all-time points, 48th in all-time assists and tied for sixth in power play goals (236). Among active NHL players, Selanne ranks second in goals, fourth in assists and third in scoring. With 410-461=871 points in 774 games in an Anaheim uniform (1996-2001 & 2005-11), Selanne is the Ducks’ franchise leader in goals, assists, points, power play goals (163), power play points (367), game-winning goals (69), plus/minus (+123) and games played. He won his first Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007 in his 15th NHL season. In 111 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Selanne has collected 41-38=79 points with 52 PIM. He currently leads the Ducks in career playoff goals (32), points (60), power play goals (13), game-winning goals (7) and appearances (77).
