Blue Jackets Ink Fedor Tyutin to Extension

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Fedor Tyutin to a six-year contract extension, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced today.
Tyutin, 28, has registered 37 goals and 122 assists for 159 points with 321 penalty minutes in 492 career games with Columbus and the New York Rangers during his seven NHL seasons. He has collected 22-71-93 and 162 penalty minutes in 242 career games with the Blue Jackets, ranking second in club history among defensemen in goals, assists and points and fourth in games played.
“Fedor has been our top defenseman since we acquired him from the New York Rangers in 2008,” said Howson. “We are very pleased get him signed to this long-term deal.”
The Rangers’ second pick, 40th overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft, Tyutin (pronounced TYOO-tihn) tallied 7-20-27 and 32 penalty minutes in 80 games with Columbus in 2010-11. He led club defensemen in goals, assists and points and topped all players in time on ice average (22:41) for the third-straight season. Acquired by the Blue Jackets along with Christian Backman from the Rangers in exchange for Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche on July 2, 2008, he set career highs in goals (nine) and points (34) in 82 games during the 2008-09 season.
The Izhevsk, Russia native played one season of junior hockey with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League and two in the Russian Elite League before splitting the 2003-04 season between New York and its American Hockey League affiliate in Hartford. After spending the 2004-05 campaign with Hartford and St. Petersburg (Russia), he played his first full season in the NHL in 2006-07 and notched 2-12-14 and 44 penalty minutes in 66 games.
Tyutin has represented Russia in numerous international competitions, including the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games. He has captured gold medals playing for Russia at the 2008 World Championships as well as the 2002 and 2003 World Junior Championships.
