Ducks Re-Sign Bobby Ryan

Tuesday, Sep. 14th, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Bobby Ryan to a five-year contract, running through the 2014-15 season.

"We’re pleased to have come to an agreement with Bobby before training camp," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. "Bobby is already a proven NHL goal scorer at the age of 23 and certainly has his best years ahead of him.”

Ryan, 23 (3/17/87), scored a career-high 35-29=64 points over 81 contests in 2009-10. In his second full season (third overall) with Anaheim, the Cherry Hill, NJ native ranked second in the NHL among U.S.-born players in goal scoring (NJ’s Zach Parise had 38) and ranked tied for 10th in the NHL overall. Ryan led all Ducks in goals, ranked third in both points and plus/minus (+9), and second in both power play goals (11) and shots (258). He scored his 100th career NHL point with a game-winning goal on Dec. 29 vs. Minnesota in his 126th career game.

The 6-2, 208-pound winger won a silver medal with Team USA at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. It was Ryan’s first Olympic appearance and second career Team USA appearance (also 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship). In six contests at Vancouver, he earned 1-1=2 points with two penalty minutes (PIM) and a +3 rating. His goal in Team USA’s 3-1 win over Switzerland in the preliminary round on Feb. 16 accounted for the first goal of the men’s hockey tournament.

Selected by Anaheim second overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy (top rookie) following the 2008-09 season. He scored 31-26=57 points in 64 games, leading all NHL rookies in goals, points, points-per-game (.89), power play goals (12) and shooting percentage (17.8%). Ryan was the first West Coast rookie (Pacific time zone) to lead the league in points since Luc Robitaille (LA) in 1986-87 (45-39=84). He also established club rookie records in both goals and points, and matched the club rookie record in assists (also Francois Beauchemin, 2005-06). In 168 career NHL games, Ryan has collected 71-60=131 points with 120 PIM and a +21 rating. He has also appeared in 15 Stanley Cup Playoff contests with Anaheim, earning 5-2=7 points, advancing with the club to Game 7 of the Conference Semifinals in 2009 vs. Detroit.
