Saturday, May. 15th, 2010

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Flint Generals 3-2 Saturday night to capture their seventh Turner Cup Championship as a member of the International Hockey League. The Komets won the series 4-1 to earn their first-ever back-to-back-to-back championships in their 58-year franchise history.

The Komets began the scoring late in the opening period when left wing Matt Syroczynski chipped in a pass at the top of the crease, scoring his 11th goal of the playoffs. The Komets continued the scoring into the second stanza, adding two goals from left wing P.C. Drouin (4, 5).

The Generals scored twice in the third period with the first coming from right wing John Ronan at the 4:29 mark and defenseman Jake Pence added a second for Flint at the 13 minute mark, but the comeback would fall short as the Komets skated away with the 3-2 win.

Boucher earned his fourth win of the series between the pipes, making 19 of 21 saves while Flint goaltender Rob Nolan made 39 of 42 saves in the loss.

Syroczynski was named the International Hockey League’s 2010 Turner Cup Playoff Most Valuable Player. He scored six goals and dished out two assists in the championship series, including a three-goal hat trick Wednesday during Game Three in Flint. He posted a total of 16 points (11 goals, five assists) in the 12 playoff games played by the Komets.
