SPHL Hands Down Fayetteville, Knoxville Suspensions

CHARLOTTE, NC – Following its review, the SPHL today announced disciplinary action resulting from incidents occurring in Game #195, Fayetteville at Knoxville, played on March 27:

Knoxville forward Darcy Rees has been suspended eight (8) games under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for pulling a Fayetteville player from the ice surface into the Knoxville bench and throwing several punches. Rees’ actions were directly responsible for escalating the original altercation into a bench-clearing brawl. Rees is suspended for Knoxville’s first eight (8) playoff games.

Knoxville forward Taylor Hustead has been suspended five (5) games pursuant to Rule 70.10, Leaving the Bench, for being the first player to leave the Ice Bears bench during the altercation. Hustead is suspended for Knoxville’s first five (5) playoff games.

Knoxville forward Tim Vitek has been suspended two (2) games under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for pulling a second Fayetteville player from the ice surface into the Knoxville bench. Vitek is suspended for Knoxville’s first two (2) playoff games.

Knoxville head coach Marc Rodgers has been suspended two (2) games under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for failing to control his bench during the altercation. Rodgers is suspended for Knoxville’s first two (2) playoff games.

Fayetteville forward Murray Free has been suspended six (6) games for his actions. Free was assessed a game misconduct under Rule 70.6 for returning to the ice after being ordered to the dressing room, which carries an automatic five (5) game suspension. Free is also suspended one (1) game and fined an undisclosed amount under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for his obscene gestures directed toward the Knoxville crowd as he was leaving the ice. Free is suspended for Fayetteville’s first six (6) playoff games.

Fayetteville defenseman Nick Bydal has been suspended five (5) games pursuant to Rule 70.10, Leaving the Bench, for being the first player to leave the FireAntz bench during the altercation. Bydal is suspended for Fayetteville’s first five (5) playoff games.

Fayetteville forward Brett Needham has been suspended three (3) games under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for making an obscene gesture toward the Knoxville fans and for deliberately leaping into the Knoxville bench in an attempt to continue the altercation. Needham is suspended for Fayetteville’s first three (3) playoff games.

Fayetteville forward Rob Sich is suspended one (1) game for receiving his fourth accumulated game misconduct of the season. Sich was assessed a game misconduct under Rule 47.7, Fighting Off the Playing Surface. Sich is suspended for Fayetteville’s first playoff game.

Fayetteville head coach Tommy Stewart has been suspended two (2) games under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline, for failing to control his bench during the altercation. Stewart is suspended for Fayetteville’s first two (2) playoff games.

Both teams are also being fined an undisclosed amount under Rule 29, Supplementary Discipline.

Any game suspensions that cannot be completed during the 2010 President’s Cup Playoffs will carry over to the beginning of the 2010-2011 regular season.

Additional disciplinary action will be forthcoming in regard to Fayetteville’s actions leading to the forfeiture of the contest.
