Elmira Beats Trenton in Longest Game in ECHL History

PRINCETON, N.J. – The longest game in the 21-year history of the ECHL ended at 6:10 of the fourth overtime when Josh Aspenlind scored off a rebound from a shot by Wes Cunningham to give Elmira a 5-4 win over Trenton in Game 1 of their North Division Semifinal Series in the Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
The 126:10 marathon, which lasted 4:55 and ended shortly before midnight, breaks the record of 121:24 when Greenville beat Louisiana 3-2 in the conference finals on May 5, 2000. It is the 11th game in league history that has gone more than 100 minutes and it ranks 14th among the longest games in the ECHL, the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League.
The two teams combined for 145 shots, with Trenton taking 75 and Elmira having 70, to break the record of 139 shots by Louisiana (82) and Jackson (57) in a triple overtime game on Apr. 5, 2002.
Elmira’s Michael Teslak made 71 saves which is the third most in an ECHL postseason game while Trenton’s Gerald Coleman had a team record 65 saves. Brian Eklund of Pensacola holds the record with 83 saves in a double overtime game at Louisiana on Apr. 14, 2004 while Andrew Allen of Jackson had 78 saves in a triple overtime games at Louisiana on Apr. 5, 2002.
