Komets Keep Pace During Their Busy Week

ROCHESTER, MI - The Fort Wayne Komets had a busy travel schedule this past week playing four games in five nights in four different cities. They won road games Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for a three-game road winning streak before dropping their last game of the week at home Saturday night against the Icehawks. The Komets began the week in fourth place but finished winning three out of their four games, earning six points to jump into second place, just one point behind first place Port Huron.

Leading the way for the Komets during the busy travel week was left wing P.C. Drouin. He recorded six points last week, scoring two goals and dished out four assists. Drouin extended his league-high point streak to nine-games, recording 13 points during the stretch (4g, 9a) and is also on a six-game assist streak (6a). He is tied for the team lead in points with teammate Colin Chaulk, both have recorded 33 points so far this season.

The Flint Generals have appeared in the most games going into extra hockey this season. They have participated in two overtime games and the IHL’s only two shootouts so far this season. They dropped their second shootout Friday night in Kalamazoo. So far in the extra sessions, Flint is 1-3 with their only win coming in overtime in a 6-5 victory over the Lumberjacks back on November 20th.

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (1-1-0-0) – Marty Standish scored the quickest goal to start a game in franchise and U.S. Cellular Coliseum history when he netted the puck 11 seconds into the game vs. Kalamazoo on Dec. 13. Three times this season the PrairieThunder has scored a goal within the first 42 seconds of the game. The PrairieThunder has a 4-1 record when scoring the first goal of the game. Defenseman A.J. Bozoian has scored six points (1 goal, 5 assists) in the last eight games he has played. He had one point in the first 12 games of the season. Veteran forward Don Parsons needs just three goals to become the all-time leader in career goals scored in minor league professional hockey. He has 675 and the record is 677 by former Flint coach Kevin Kerr. Parsons also needs only two points to reach 1,300 in his 17-year career and 22 games to reach the 1,000 mark.

Flint Generals - (1-1-0-1) – Flint goaltender Bill Zaniboni posted an IHL game-high 47 saves Saturday in Flint’s 4-2 victory over the Lumberjacks, Zaniboni’s former team. When Flint leads after the second period of play, they usually win. Flint is 7-1-1-2 after 40 minutes of hockey this season. The Generals earned their first win at LC Walker Arena in Muskegon Saturday, which also marked their first victory on Saturday night this season. Right wing Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored his first goal of the season versus his former team, the Kalamazoo Wings, on Friday in a 5-4 shootout loss. He connected with the back of the net again Saturday in Muskegon. The Generals are 2-1-0-1 in their last four games, earning five out of eight points last week.

Fort Wayne Komets - (3-1-0-0) – Komets played four games in five nights and earned six points for the week to improve to 13-8-1-0. Komets enter week 10 of 2008-09 in second place with 27 points, one point behind first place Port Huron. Komets finished the week dropping a 4-1 home decision to Port Huron Saturday to snap Fort Wayne’s win string at four games. Komet newcomer Leo Thomas was held pointless for the first time since joining the Komets two weeks ago, snapping his point streak at five games (4g, 3a). Komets started last week winning all three road games for a three-game road winning streak. Leading the I: Guy Dupuis continues to lead defensemen with 20 assists and 25 points. Komet special teams lead with a power play success rating of 20.6% and penalty kill success rate of 86.5%. Prior to Port Huron’s three 3rd-period power play goals Saturday, the Komets had successfully killed 48 of 49 power plays.

Kalamazoo Wings - (1-1-0-0) – K-Wings will hold the 9th annual Teddy Bear Toss Game this Saturday versus Bloomington. Kalamazoo is 7-1-0-0 during home teddy bear toss nights. Kalamazoo is on a five-game home winning streak. K-Wings have lost two straight on the road. Rick Cleaver has scored four goals in his last four games. Lucas Drake has tallied seven of his 12 goals this season against the Flint Generals. Tyler Willis recorded his 400th career point last Saturday in a game-tying goal against Bloomington. Mark Nebus played in his 100th career game on 12/13/08 against Bloomington. Kalamazoo won in a shootout last Friday versus Flint. Justin Cross scored the game-winner in the extra-session. The game was Cross' first since being injured on October 24th against Muskegon. The shootout was Kalamazoo's first of the year and only the second overall shootout in the IHL this year. Kalamazoo will play their second Tuesday contest of the year when they head to Port Huron. The K-Wings are 1-0-0-0 on Tuesday's this year, with their lone victory occurring on November 18th in a 5-3 victory against the Icehawks. Kalamazoo leads the league in home power-play percentage at 19.3%.

Muskegon Lumberjacks - (0-2-0-0) – Despite falling into third place in the tight IHL standings, the Lumberjacks own the best record (12-7-1-0) and winning percentage (.625). Although they have sustained setbacks in four of their last five home games, the Lumberjacks eight overall victories at LC Walker Arena represent two more wins than the rest of the IHL. Defenseman Darryl McArthur has emerged as the IHL premiere plus player at plus-16. Defenseman Kyle Kos will play in his 500th pro career game coming up this Friday night on home ice when the ‘Jacks host Fort Wayne. When the ‘Jacks travel to Fort Wayne and Port Huron on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, it will mark their first road trip for December and their first games away since November 29th. When the ‘Jacks sustained a 4-2 setback against Flint, it marked their first home setback on Saturday nights this year (4-1-0-0).

Port Huron Icehawks - (2-1-0-0) – The Port Huron Icehawks moved back into first place with a win on Saturday versus Fort Wayne. They are now one point in front of the Komets. The road has been kind to the Icehawks this season. They are on a four game road win streak and have won nine of their last 11 games away from McMorran Arena. After beginning the season 0-3 on the road, they have now skated to the league’s best road record at 9-5-0-0. The Icehawks currently hold the league’s longest road win streak this season at five games (from 11/07/08-11/15/08). After playing ten of their last 14 contests on the road, the Icehawks will now return home for five of their next six contests. The Icehawks are undefeated when leading after the second period this season. They are 10-5-0-0 when leading after the first period and 10-0-0-0 when holding onto that lead through the second period. Kris Vernarsky and Tab Lardner are both on four game point streaks. Both players have two goals and four assists in that span.
