OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the signing of defenceman Brendan Bell to a one-year, two-way contract and goaltender Mitchell O’Keefe to a one-year, entry-level contract.

Bell, an Ottawa native and graduate of Brian Kilrea’s Ottawa 67’s, played last season with both the Phoenix Coyotes and their American Hockey League affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. In 69 games with the Rampage, he scored seven goals and added 24 assists for 31 points while recording 80 penalty minutes. He recorded no points in two games with the Coyotes.

The 25-year-old was the Toronto Maple Leafs’ third-round choice (65th overall) in the 2001 National Hockey League entry draft. He made his NHL debut in 2005-06 with Toronto, playing in one game with the Maple Leafs. In 48 career NHL games with Toronto and Phoenix, Bell has scored one goal and added six assists while recording 27 penalty minutes.

The defenceman has represented Canada internationally on two occasions, winning a gold medal at the 2003-04 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, and winning a silver medal at the 2002 world junior championships in Halifax.

Bell enjoyed a decorated junior hockey career with the Ottawa 67’s, scoring 171 points (32-139) in 238 games over four seasons. In his final year with the 67’s in 2002-03, he was named to the Canadian Hockey League’s first all-star team and won the CHL defenceman-of-the-year award.

O’Keefe, 24, played last season with the Ferris State Bulldogs (Michigan) of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In 24 games (22 starts), he posted a 10-8-5 record with a 2.28 goals-against average and .902 save percentage. For his efforts, O’Keefe was named Ferris State’s most valuable player for 2007-08.

He went on to finish the season with the American Hockey League’s Iowa Stars, posting a 0-1-0 record, 2.35 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage in two games.

The Almonte, Ont., native, who was named Ferris State’s rookie of the year in 2005-06, completed his college career ranking second among FSU all-time leaders in goals-against average (2.68), tied for second in shutouts (six), third in save percentage (.903), fifth in both victories (31) and minutes played (5,073); tied for fifth in games played (86), sixth in total saves (2,104) and eighth in winning percentage (.453).
