Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Craig Rivet and the San Jose Sharks’ seventh round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for the Sabres’ second round picks in both 2009 and 2010.
Rivet (9/13/74, 6’2”, 210 lbs) appeared in 74 games with San Jose last season, picking up 35 points (5+35) and 104 penalty minutes. In 13 postseason games, he collected six assists (0+6). Rivet was an assistant captain last year with the Sharks.
“We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster,” said Regier. “He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience.”
The North Bay, Ontario native has appeared in 744 NHL games and has amassed 194 points on 45 goals and 149 assists (45+14). Rivet played parts of 12 seasons in Montreal before a trade to San Jose during the 2006-2007 season. Rivet was the Canadiens’ third-round choice (68th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.
